The eco-festival of the sea and nature in the Tremiti Islands Marine Protected Area
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Posidonia Festival was created to showcase and protect one of Italy's most stunning coastal gems: the Tremiti Islands archipelago, located in the municipality of the same name in the Province of Foggia. As the only archipelago in Puglia and the heart of a Marine Protected Area established to safeguard the seabed, Posidonia meadows, and Adriatic biodiversity, it is the perfect setting. Conceived by the Marlin Tremiti team and the Laboratorio del Ma.Re., it is considered the first Italian international eco-festival entirely dedicated to the sea, nature, and sustainable tourism.
Each edition turns the islands of San Domino, San Nicola, and Caprara into an open-air laboratory. The program alternates between daytime activities and evening gatherings, all with free admission:
The evenings, hosted in Piazza Belvedere, serve as the festival's public forum: science communicators, researchers, journalists, and television personalities take the stage to discuss climate, the sea, and conservation, with a special presentation stop on the Gargano coast in Rodi Garganico.
The event's very name honors Posidonia oceanica, the seagrass that forms vast underwater meadows and acts as a green lung for the Mediterranean: it produces oxygen, protects coasts from erosion, and provides a sanctuary for hundreds of species. The festival's entire message revolves around its protection, bridging scientific research, public awareness, and the promotion of environmentally respectful tourism in the Tremiti Islands.
Supported over the years by institutions such as the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, ISPRA, Arpa Puglia, CNR-Irbim, Marevivo, and the Italian Naval League, the Posidonia Festival has become a defining event for the Puglian archipelago and the entire Puglia Region, successfully linking the life of a small island community to the grand challenge of ocean conservation.
At the moment, the organizers of the Posidonia Festival have not yet released the official dates for the 2026 edition in the Tremiti Islands. Past editions have taken place in July, featuring five days of activities within the Marine Protected Area of the Puglian archipelago. During 2025, the BIT 2026 project was also announced, through which the festival and its partners will promote the Tremiti tourism product at the International Tourism Exchange. The detailed program of the eco-festival will be published by the organizers once finalized: check back on this page for updates on dates, guests, and activities.
The Tremiti Islands can be reached by ferry or hydrofoil from the Gargano ports of Termoli, Rodi Garganico, Peschici, and Vieste; daily connections are active during the summer. Most accommodation facilities are located on the island of San Domino.
All activities and evening events at the Posidonia Festival are free. Booking is recommended for snorkeling, diving, and boat excursions, as these often have limited capacity.
Bring water shoes, a snorkel mask, and sunscreen. As you are in a Marine Protected Area, always follow the instructions provided by the staff and do not collect any marine flora or fauna.
