The Amici in Festa floats take over Piazza Indipendenza
The Pontino Carnival is not just a local event; it is a traveling caravan that, for three weeks, brings its allegorical floats from village to village across the entire province of Latina. The Pontinia stop is one of the most anticipated in the circuit. The Municipality of Pontinia, located in the heart of the Agro Pontino reclamation area in southern Lazio, opens its streets to a parade that starts at Piazza Indipendenza and continues along the main streets of the center, turning the town's orderly rationalist grid into a long procession of music and color for an afternoon.
The artistic engine of the event is the Amici in Festa Association, which builds the allegorical floats by hand every year: mobile structures made of papier-mâché and iron, brought to life by costumed performers and sound systems. The themes draw heavily from popular imagination and cartoons loved by both adults and children, ranging from Pirates of the Caribbean to the Carioca vibes of Rio, from Aladdin to Angels and Demons, passing through Spongebob, Doraemon, The Simpsons, Tom & Jerry, the Circus, La Bubu, and the visionary Mad Hatter.
In Pontinia, the carnival is above all a local affair. The parade is born from the collaboration between the municipal administration, the P.Cap merchants' association, and the network of volunteers who work on the floats every year. There are no tickets and no grandstands: you stand on the street, wear a mask, and follow the procession from the sidewalk or walk alongside the floats. This popular, participatory dimension explains why every edition attracts thousands of people, many of whom come from neighboring towns in the province.
For some years now, the Pontinia parade has included a moment of remembrance dedicated to Sandro Micheli, patron of the local broadcaster Tv SL48 and for decades the true soul of the Pontinia Carnival: he was the one who presented the floats from the microphone, interviewed adults and children, and set the rhythm of the afternoon with his dance music. The certificates given to the participating groups are dedicated to his memory.
It is worth arriving a few hours early. Pontinia is one of the "città di fondazione" (planned cities) built in the 1930s during the reclamation of the Pontine Marshes: Piazza Indipendenza, the Church of Sant'Anna, and the public buildings define a compact and recognizable rationalist layout, which the carnival fills with color. Within a few kilometers, you can find the Circeo National Park, Lake Fogliano, and the beaches of Sabaudia: the carnival day can easily become a longer trip in southern Lazio.
The Pontinia stop traditionally falls on a Sunday afternoon, starting from Piazza Indipendenza in the early afternoon. Admission is free and no reservation is required. We recommend arriving early to find parking in the streets adjacent to the center, which are closed to traffic on the day of the parade.
The Pontinia stop of the 2026 edition took place on Sunday, February 1, with a gathering and departure at 2:30 PM from Piazza Indipendenza. Twelve allegorical floats created by the Amici in Festa Association crossed the main streets of the Pontinia center, accompanied by masked groups and a large audience of families and children.
The event was part of the traveling circuit of the 2026 Pontino Carnival, scheduled on weekends from January 25 to February 17 between Borgo Vodice, Borgo Montenero, Pontinia, Cisterna di Latina, San Felice Circeo, Sabaudia, and Latina, where the grand finale of Shrove Tuesday was held.
The event was supported by an agreement between the Municipality of Pontinia and the organizing association, with the support of the P.Cap merchants' association and the logistical assistance of the local police, civil protection, and municipal staff.
The subjects of the 2026 edition ranged from Pirates of the Caribbean to the atmospheres of Rio, from Aladdin to Angels and Demons, with Spongebob, Doraemon, The Simpsons, Tom & Jerry, the Circus, La Bubu, and the Mad Hatter.
By car: Pontinia can be reached via the Via Appia (SS7) or the Strada Regionale 148 Pontina, taking the exit toward Pontinia; from Rome, the journey takes about an hour and a half. On the day of the parade, the center is closed to traffic: it is best to park in the outer streets and continue on foot.
By train: the most convenient station is Priverno-Fossanova (Rome-Naples line via Formia), connected to Pontinia by local buses; alternatively, use the Latina Scalo station.
By plane: Rome Fiumicino and Rome Ciampino airports, then rent a car or take a train.
The event is free and held outdoors. The parade starts from Piazza Indipendenza in the early afternoon and continues along the streets of the center for several hours.
Bring a mask or a costume: dressing up is the norm. Wear warm winter clothing, comfortable shoes, and keep an eye on children along the float route. Confetti and streamers can be found on-site at the stalls.
Pontinia offers some accommodation options; for a wider choice, you can stay in Sabaudia, Latina, or San Felice Circeo, all less than thirty minutes away by car.
