About Ferragosto Bassianese

Every mid-August, Bassiano, a medieval village in the Lepini Mountains in the province of Latina, celebrates the Ferragosto Bassianese and the Feast of Saint Roch. The streets and squares of the historic center come alive with masses and processions featuring the local town band, traditional games, food stalls serving the excellent prosciutto di Bassiano, live music, bingo, and fireworks. It is the most cherished summer festival in Bassiano, blending devotion, tradition, and conviviality.

The Ferragosto Bassianese and the Feast of Saint Roch

In the heart of summer, the town of Bassiano, a perched medieval village in the Lepini Mountains in the province of Latina, comes to life for the Ferragosto Bassianese and the Feast of Saint Roch. It is the most anticipated event of the year for the community: a widespread celebration that weaves together popular devotion to Saint Roch with the secular festivities of Ferragosto, drawing residents, returning emigrants, and visitors from across the province of Latina to this small Lazio town.

A festive village in the Lepini Mountains

The celebrations take place amidst the narrow cobblestone streets and squares of the historic center, with the beating heart located in Piazza Giacomo Matteotti. Bassiano, home to the humanist and printer Aldo Manuzio, preserves an intact medieval layout, complete with walls, towers, and evocative corners that provide a natural backdrop for the festival. The event, promoted by the municipal administration together with the Pro Loco, unfolds over several days in mid-August.

Devotion to Saint Roch

The most solemn moment is the patronal feast of Saint Roch on August 16th: the day is marked by Holy Mass and the procession of the saint's statue through the village streets, accompanied by the historic "Aldo Pio Manuzio" town band of Bassiano. The procession, surrounded by the faithful and crowds of onlookers, represents the deep bond between the community and its protector, traditionally invoked against epidemics.

Games, flavors, and entertainment

Alongside the religious rites, the festival offers a rich entertainment program. On Ferragosto, the traditional games return to the square—from the greasy pole to tug-of-war—engaging both young and old, alongside exhibitions set up throughout the village. Every evening, food stalls open, where you can savor local specialties, particularly the excellent prosciutto di Bassiano, the pride of local gastronomy. The evenings continue with live music in Piazza Matteotti, the classic tombolata (bingo), and, as a grand finale, a fireworks display that illuminates the sky over the Lepini village.

A festival to experience

The Ferragosto Bassianese and the Feast of Saint Roch are the ideal opportunity to discover one of the most authentic villages in Lazio, amidst handed-down traditions, genuine flavors, and the warm welcome of a community that gathers in full during the month of August to renew its celebration.
