The Valdera community carnival featuring street art and decorated Piaggio Ape vehicles
The Pontedera Carnival, located in the heart of the Valdera region in the Province of Pisa, has moved away from the classic model of large allegorical floats to embrace a new formula, co-created with local associations. The Municipality of Pontedera defines it as a "carnival of the villages, street art, and the community": a widespread event that turns the historic center into an open-air stage along the axis between Piazza Cavour, Corso Matteotti, and Piazza Curtatone.
The hallmark of this carnival is the decorated Piaggio Ape: the famous three-wheeled vehicles born in the Piaggio factories of Pontedera, themed and customized by local artists, replace traditional floats and lead the parade. It is a direct tribute to the industrial and creative identity of the city of the Vespa, making the Pontedera Carnival unique in Tuscany.
The heart of the event is the Mondocarnevale parade, a traveling procession that winds through the center, accompanied by musicians and dancers from various countries across Africa, Latin America, and Europe. The concept is that of an inclusive, multicultural carnival that weaves together traditional festivities with a sense of community and cross-cultural exchange.
The day is designed to engage all ages: the afternoon is dedicated to children and families, while the evening gives way to music and entertainment for adults.
Visiting the carnival is also the perfect opportunity to discover Pontedera, a lively hub in the Valdera region world-famous for Piaggio and its museum dedicated to the Vespa and the Ape. By placing the Ape at the center of the festivities, the carnival perfectly captures the spirit of this Tuscan city, where popular tradition and industrial culture have always coexisted.
The 2026 edition of the Pontedera Carnival took place on Saturday, March 1, 2026, in the historic center, along Corso Matteotti between Piazza Cavour and Piazza Curtatone. The format of a widespread carnival built with local associations was confirmed: an afternoon dedicated to children with street performers and fun, and an evening space for music and entertainment for adults. In 2026, the decorated Piaggio Ape vehicles once again served as the common thread of the festival, celebrating the identity of the city of the Vespa.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, developed in collaboration with local associations, was defined and announced by the Municipality of Pontedera in the weeks leading up to the event. The structure of the day followed the new format:
