About Renaissance Festival

For four days, the historic center of Pontassieve, nestled in the heart of the Valdisieve near Florence, travels back in time for the Renaissance Festival. Costumed processions, flag-wavers, falconry, archery, medieval games, ancient crafts, period markets, and food stalls bring Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and the town's streets to life. The highlight is the spectacular 'Scoppio del Castello', a grand fire and pyrotechnic performance re-enacting a fortress siege. Free admission to all events.

Pontassieve returns to the Renaissance

Every spring, the historic center of Pontassieve, an important town in the Valdisieve area just outside Florence, transforms into a village from another era. The Renaissance Festival, reaching its fourteenth edition in 2026, is organized by the Associazione Corteo Storico di Pontassieve and has become one of the most cherished events in the Florence province calendar. For four days, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and the town center are filled with costumed characters, the aroma of grilled food, music, performances, and flags waving in the wind.

A dive into 16th-century Tuscany

The event was created to celebrate the region's historical roots and showcase daily life in Renaissance Tuscany. The heart of the festival is the grand costumed historical procession, which draws numerous re-enactment groups and associations from across the region: ladies and knights, commoners and soldiers parade through the streets, recreating the atmosphere and trades of the past. Alongside the procession, flag-wavers and musicians set the rhythm for the festivities.

Performances, games, and ancient crafts

The program features falconry displays with birds of prey in flight, archery trials, performances by stilt-walkers and street artists, as well as Renaissance games designed for children. A themed market winds through the town center, featuring period crafts and workshops, while food stalls offer traditional flavors: grilled meats and vegetables, hearty soups, and craft beers.

The Scoppio del Castello

The climax of the Renaissance Festival is the Scoppio del Castello, a spectacular evening fire and pyrotechnic show that re-enacts the assault on a fortress. It is the event that draws the largest crowds each year and closes the festival in grand style. Side events also include the San Michele Arcangelo Prize ceremony, an award tied to the identity and community of Pontassieve.

A community celebration

More than just a re-enactment, the Renaissance Festival is a major community moment for Pontassieve and the entire Valdisieve: an opportunity to rediscover local history, stroll through the festively decorated historic center, and enjoy four days of outdoor entertainment. Admission is free for all events.
