The Carnival celebrated in August

In Pofi, a village in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of Ciociaria and southern Lazio, Carnival is not just a February festival. For some years now, the community has chosen to replicate its most beloved tradition in the middle of summer: the Summer Carnival, a night parade of allegorical floats and masked groups that brings the town to life on an August evening, when the nights are long, the square is full, and many Pofi natives return to the village for their holidays.

The idea is simple and successful: take the heritage of papier-mâché, costumes, and passion that fuels the Pofi Carnival every year—one of the longest-running carnival events in the Frosinone area, reaching its fifty-fourth edition in 2026—and bring it outdoors under the summer sky, adding live music, DJ sets, and a festive square atmosphere.

The parade: from the library square to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele

The route is now a well-established ritual. The gathering takes place in the late afternoon at the library square, where masked groups assemble around the allegorical floats built throughout the year by local master craftsmen. Around 8:00 PM, the procession sets off and winds through the village streets to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, the heart of Pofi, where the parade concludes and the evening turns into a party.

A different theme every year

Each edition chooses a common thread that guides the builders' creativity: from the Time Travel of the 2024 edition to the world of cartoons in the 2025 edition, which filled the square with drawn characters, TV theme songs, and pop culture references that entertained children and parents alike. It is precisely this dual appeal—nostalgic for adults, spectacular for the little ones—that explains the event's rapid success.

Pofi, Ciociaria, and its summer

The Summer Carnival is part of a particularly rich summer calendar. In July, the village hosts the Bomboklat Festival at the municipal stadium and the Pofi Fest — The Smile Festival, and in August, the Days of Saint Sebastian, with free shows in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. Those arriving for the parade will find a lively village, with its historic center enclosed within ancient fortified walls, the churches of Santa Maria, San Pietro, and Sant'Antonino Martire, and the Territorial Prehistoric Museum, which houses artifacts covering over a million years of prehistory in lower Lazio.

The formula remains that of an authentic popular festival: free admission, strong participation from residents, and organization entrusted to the Municipality of Pofi together with local carnival associations, with the support of the Lazio Region.

Why it's worth the evening

Seeing the allegorical floats parade in the dark, illuminated and surrounded by hundreds of people in masks, is a different experience from the winter Carnival: no cold, no rain, just the mild temperature of an August night in Ciociaria. It is one of the few opportunities in central Italy to witness a true out-of-season Carnival, and it is also an excellent excuse to discover a corner of Lazio rarely visited by mass tourism.
