An evening of pizzica and folk music in Gemini di Ugento
Pizzica te Focu is one of the most beloved evenings of the Salento summer in Gemini, an inland village within the municipality of Ugento, in the province of Lecce. The name, in the local Salento dialect, evokes the fire and passion of pizzica, the ritual dance that has defined Salento's folk festivals for centuries and remains a core part of this region's deep cultural identity.
The event takes place in the Ciro Menotti district, where the streets and squares fill with people, market stalls, and live music. It is a community celebration first and foremost: here, pizzica is not a stage performance but a shared dance, with the classic ronde (dance circles) forming spontaneously around the musicians, inviting anyone to step in and join the movement.
For those unfamiliar with Salento, pizzica is far more than a musical genre; it is the soul of Puglian folk music. Originally born as a ritual linked to tarantism, today it is a dance of courtship, celebration, and community. The driving beat of the tambourine, accompanied by the accordion, guitar, and violin, sets the pace for the dancers, while singers perform traditional songs in dialect passed down through generations.
Just a few kilometers away, every summer, Salento hosts the massive Notte della Taranta festival. In villages like Gemini, these local pizzica evenings represent the most authentic, grassroots version of the tradition: free, spontaneous, and open to all. Pizzica te Focu is part of a network of events that animate the Ugento area from June to September, spanning from Gemini to the coastal towns of Torre San Giovanni, Torre Mozza, and Lido Marini.

Attending Pizzica te Focu means experiencing the true Salento: the one of village squares, the never-ending beat of tambourines, street food, and summer nights that stretch until dawn to the rhythm of the taranta.
