The Valsesia Carnival between the 'Ossette' Dinner and the 'Paniccia' Lunch
In the small town of Piode, nestled in the Upper Valsesia in the province of Vercelli, the Carnival is measured not by floats, but by traditional dishes shared with the entire village. Here, the festival is above all a moment of conviviality: people gather around the table to rediscover the recipes that have accompanied the Carnival season in the Piedmontese valleys for generations.
The heart of the festival lies in two traditional gastronomic events, hosted at the Ristorante dei Pescatori in Piode:
Paniccia (from the local dialect «paniscia») is the soup that best represents Carnival in Valsesia: a thick rice and vegetable soup enriched with meat, cured meats, and bread. Its origins are lost in time, and popular tradition holds it to be ancient, linked to the charitable act of feeding the poor. Even today, in many villages of the valley, the Paniccia retains this communal and charitable character, distributed through the streets and squares during the festive days of Carnival.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Piode, the village Carnival is one of those authentic celebrations of the high valley, where there is no spectacle but rather participation, and where tradition is passed down around a steaming bowl. It is the ideal occasion for those who want to discover the truest face of the Alpine Piedmont, made of simple flavors, hospitality, and ancient customs that are still alive today.
Piode is a village in Valsesia at the foot of Monte Rosa, a land of Walser traditions, hiking, and mountain tourism. Visiting the village during Carnival means combining the discovery of the territory with the joy of a heartfelt and deeply rooted popular festival, in one of the most evocative areas of northern Piedmont.
Il Carnevale di Piode 2026 si è articolato in due giornate. Lunedì 16 febbraio, alle ore 20:00, la Cena delle Ossette al Ristorante dei Pescatori, seguita dalla veglia danzante e dalla presentazione delle maschere presso il locale del paese.
Martedì 17 febbraio, alle ore 12:00, il Pranzo della Paniccia al Ristorante dei Pescatori, con la tradizionale minestra di riso e verdure del Carnevale valsesiano e, a seguire, l'estrazione della lotteria. La festa è organizzata dalla Pro Loco di Piode.
Piode is located in the Upper Valsesia (VC). By car: A26 motorway, exit Romagnano Sesia/Ghemme, then take the SS299 Valsesia road towards Alagna. By train: reach the Varallo Sesia station, then continue by bus or car along the valley.
