About Pimonte Living Nativity

For over thirty years, between Christmas and Epiphany, the Valle Lavatoio in Pimonte has transformed into a two-thousand-year-old Bethlehem. Organized by the Solo per Amore association, this Living Nativity winds along a two-kilometer path featuring rustic cottages, ancient workshops, and scenes of daily life brought to life by around a hundred performers. Set in the Lattari Mountains, in the province of Naples, the Nativity is staged inside an old mill, making it one of the most beloved living nativity scenes in Campania.

A Living Nativity in the Lattari Mountains

The Pimonte Living Nativity is one of the most anticipated Christmas events in the Metropolitan City of Naples and the entire Campania region. Every year, between late December and Epiphany, the small town of Pimonteโ€”home to just over six thousand residents nestled in the Lattari Mountains, between the Sorrento and Amalfi coastsโ€”opens the gates of the Valle Lavatoio to recreate the Bethlehem of two thousand years ago. The event is organized by the Solo per Amore ODV volunteer association, which brings together dozens of volunteers from the Franche district and surrounding towns.

Valle Lavatoio: A Natural Stage

The strength of the event lies in its unique setting. The Valle Lavatoio (Wash Valley) takes its name from the limestone rocks carved by water, used for centuries by local women as natural washbasins. The stream bed, wooden footbridges, dry-stone walls, and ancient rural architecture provide a ready-made backdrop that requires no construction: once the fires and lanterns are lit, the landscape does the rest. The Nativity is housed inside an old mill, one of the most characteristic and recognizable details of this representation.

A Tradition Born in 1992

It all began in 1992, when a group of valley residents built a few wooden huts around the nativity cave to celebrate Christmas Mass. From that simple gesture, a tradition was born that has grown, edition after edition, to involve the entire community: the parish, the municipality, local businesses, and the residents of the Franche district. Over the years, the path has been consolidated, bridges reinforced, and the huts restored to ensure a comfortable and safe visit. The 2025-2026 Christmas edition marked the 32nd.

The Path and Ancient Crafts

Visitors do not watch a seated performance; they walk. The route winds for about two kilometers along the valley trails, dotted with huts and workshops where about one hundred performers stage scenes inspired by the great tradition of the 18th-century Neapolitan nativity scene. You will encounter:

  • shepherds with their flocks and fires burning along the stream;
  • artisans at work in their shops: the blacksmith, the carpenter, the baker, the spinner, the basket maker;
  • the court of Herod, with soldiers and dignitaries in costume;
  • the Three Wise Men, the stars of the final evening on January 6th;
  • the Holy Familyโ€”Mary, Joseph, and the Babyโ€”in the mill that marks the end of the path.

Traditional Flavors

Alongside the performance, gastronomy plays an integral role in the Pimonte festival. Along the route and in the refreshment area, you can find local Christmas specialties, with a tasting menu that typically includes a first or second course, a zeppola, and a drink. This is how the association self-funds the event, alongside entrance tickets and donations.

Why it is worth the trip

Compared to more commercial living nativity scenes, the one in Pimonte retains a strong community spirit: the performers are the villagers themselves, the crafts on display are those that were truly practiced in this valley, and the proceeds remain within the local area. Its proximity to Castellammare di Stabia, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast makes it an easy stop to include in a winter stay in Campania, when the villages of the Lattari Mountains are free from the summer crowds.

Pimonte Living Nativity โ€” edition 2026

The 32nd edition of the Pimonte Living Nativity took place between 2025 and 2026, with three evenings in December and three during the Epiphany period: Saturday, January 3, Sunday, January 4, and Tuesday, January 6, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. In the Valle Lavatoio, about one hundred performers brought a two-kilometer path to life, featuring ancient craft workshops, Herod's court, and the Nativity set up in the old mill. Entrance ticket 4 euros, with online pre-sales almost always sold out.

32nd Edition: December 2025 and January 2026

The 2025-2026 edition of the Pimonte Living Nativity confirmed the traditional six-evening calendar, three during the Christmas period and three during the Epiphany. The January 2026 openings โ€” Saturday the 3rd, Sunday the 4th, and Tuesday the 6th โ€” concluded the route in the Valle Lavatoio, with the Epiphany evening dedicated to the arrival of the Three Wise Men, always the most anticipated moment.

The organization was handled as every year by the Solo per Amore ODV association, which managed the online ticket pre-sales on its website: almost all dates sold out well in advance, so much so that the association even added an extra evening on January 10th. The ticket price remained fixed at 4 euros per person, a sum used to cover setup and trail maintenance costs.

Once again, the two-kilometer path crossed the limestone rocks of the natural washbasins, the wooden footbridges over the stream, and the craft huts, ending in front of the Nativity set up in the ancient mill. There was no shortage of tastings of traditional local Christmas dishes in the refreshment area.
