In the heart of Ciociaria, in Castrocielo (Frosinone province, Southern Lazio), the Pigna Festival is one of the most cherished events on the spring calendar. Organized by the Pro Loco Castrocielo, the event features the "Pigna... è tradizione" competition in Piazza Umberto I, paying tribute to the cake that has been a staple of local Easter celebrations for generations.

What is a pigna?

The pigna is a traditional local Easter cake made with simple, wholesome ingredients: flour, eggs, lard, and bread yeast, often scented with anise, vermouth, or liqueur. The surface is covered in a white sugar and egg-white glaze, decorated with colorful sprinkles that set during baking. Every family guards its own secret recipe, passed down from mother to daughter, and the competition is a wonderful way to compare these unique domestic variations.

The "Pigna... è tradizione" competition

During the festival, the cakes brought by participants are numbered and judged by a panel of experts. After the judging, the cakes are distributed to the public, turning the competition into a moment of sharing and community. Participation is free, both for those entering their own pigna and for those who simply wish to taste them in the square.

The link with "Cantando la Palma"

The Pigna Festival is part of the historic "Cantando la Palma" event, dedicated to folk singing, which celebrates its 28th edition in 2026. On Palm Sunday weekend, numerous choirs perform in the square on Saturday, and on Palm Sunday, they travel through the village streets, singing from house to house. It is a rare blend of traditional gastronomy and folk music that captures the authentic spirit of the Castrocielo community.

The festival is also the perfect opportunity to visit Castrocielo and its surroundings, including the ruins of ancient Aquinum, the hills of the Liri Valley, and the flavors of Ciociaria cuisine.
