The summer barbecue festival in the hamlet of Pegola, Malalbergo
PIG – Pegola in Griglia is the summer festival that annually brings together residents and visitors in the hamlet of Pegola, part of the Municipality of Malalbergo, in the province of Bologna, in the heart of the Emilia-Romagna plain. The event takes place in Piazza 2 Agosto 1980, the central square of the hamlet, which comes alive for three evenings with long tables, food stalls, and live music.
The heart of the festival is the grill cuisine: the stars are Abruzzese arrosticini, grilled meat, and mixed grills, accompanied by side dishes, drinks, and desserts. Each evening offers a dedicated menu, with an alternative for those who prefer different dishes, all served at outdoor tables in a convivial and family atmosphere.
Alongside the gastronomy, the festival offers an entertainment program that changes each night: themed music quizzes, dancing evenings with live bands, and festive moments designed for all ages. There's also a more relaxed event, with an outdoor picnic-style film screening to conclude the festival on a light note.
PIG – Pegola in Griglia is part of the rich calendar of village festivals and fairs that characterize the summer in the small towns of the plains between Bologna and Ferrara. Events like this represent an important moment of social interaction for local communities: the hamlet of Pegola, normally quiet, becomes a meeting point for families, groups of friends, and visitors from nearby towns for a few days.
The event is organized by the Associazione Festa Sotto L'Albero, a local organization that manages the setup, catering, and music program. Admission is free, while dinner requires mandatory reservation, a sign of a well-organized and highly attended event.
The 2026 edition of PIG – Pegola in Griglia returns to Piazza 2 Agosto 1980, in Pegola di Malalbergo, from Friday, June 12th to Sunday, June 14th, opening each evening at 8:00 PM and with mandatory reservation for dinner.
The kitchen features Abruzzese arrosticini with fries, mixed grills, and, as an alternative, a breaded cutlet with a side dish, always accompanied by a drink and fruit salad. On the entertainment front, Friday offers a music quiz dedicated to the pop generation, Saturday a dancing evening with the band Magnetica, while Sunday concludes with PIG-NIC from 9:00 PM and an outdoor film screening.
Alternative menu available on Friday and Saturday evenings: breaded cutlet with side dish, drink, and fruit salad.
