The children's Carnival celebration in Piazza Dante Troisi, Dentecane
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Pietradefusi Carnival is a costume event that the Irpinian municipality dedicates to children in the village of Dentecane, in the province of Avellino. Rather than a large parade of allegorical floats like those seen in historic Campanian carnivals, this is a family-friendly town square celebration: an afternoon of entertainment, games, and music that turns Piazza Dante Troisi into a small stage of joy for the entire town.
The most recent edition recorded in the local press and on the Avellino Province's 'Sistema Irpinia' portal took place on Sunday, March 2, 2025, starting at 3:00 PM. The program featured entertainment, team games, fun, and music for both children and adults. The day's special guests were Minnie and Mickey Mouse, while the soundtrack was provided by DJ Angelo T., who kept the party going until the evening. In case of bad weather, activities were scheduled to move indoors to municipal facilities.
The celebration takes place in a village known throughout Irpinia for a very delicious reason: Dentecane is the home of artisanal nougat. Here, family-run workshops have been passing down the production of nougat and the famous pantorrone for generations, selling them locally and exporting them far beyond the borders of Campania. The municipality of Pietradefusi, with just over two thousand inhabitants, is located on the border between the provinces of Avellino and Benevento, in the middle Calore valley, and is known precisely as the village of nougat.
Carnival is one of the most vibrant popular traditions in the province of Avellino: from the floats and the 'ntreccio dance of Montemarano to the zeze of Paternopoli, and the events in Mercogliano, Castelvetere, Serino, and Cesinali, the period between February and March fills Irpinian towns with masks, tarantellas, and parades. The Pietradefusi Carnival fits into this calendar with a different, more intimate, and familiar tone, dedicated explicitly to the children of the town and neighboring villages: here, it is not the monumental floats that count, but the participation of an entire community gathering in the square.
The municipality enlivens the year with various events: the Feast of Saint Faustinus the Martyr, the patron saint celebrated on February 15 and the second Sunday of August, the Fusillo and Braciola Festival in August, and the Pietra Delli Fusi historical re-enactment during the Ferragosto holidays. The Carnival celebration effectively kicks off this calendar, right after winter, and is often the first collective gathering of the year for the families of Dentecane and the other hamlets.
At the moment, no official date has been published for the 2026 edition of the Carnival celebration in Dentecane, and the Municipality of Pietradefusi does not appear in the Irpinian carnival calendar released for 2026. As this is a movable feast tied to the liturgical calendar, the event should be expected between February and early March. It is advisable to follow the official municipal channels and local press for confirmation of the day, time, and program.
The 2026 edition of the Pietradefusi Carnival is currently not confirmed by official sources: neither the municipality nor the Avellino Province's 'Sistema Irpinia' portal have published dates or programs, and Pietradefusi does not appear in the Irpinian carnival calendar released for 2026.
The date indicated on this page is therefore purely indicative and serves only to place the event within the carnival period. If the festival is held, it is reasonable to expect the same format as previous editions: an afternoon in Piazza Dante Troisi, in the Dentecane hamlet, with entertainment, team games, music, and costumed characters for the children of the municipality and neighboring hamlets.
To find out the day, time, and program, it is advisable to consult the official channels of the Municipality of Pietradefusi and the local Irpinian press in the weeks leading up to Carnival.

Bring masks and confetti for the children and plan a stop at the nougat shops in Dentecane: the pantorrone is the most typical souvenir of the village.
