Three days dedicated to the Piedmontese language and the forgotten figures of Piedmontese culture, in the heart of the Canavese region
The Piedmontese Literary Festival, also known as the Festival Letterario Piemontèis, is a cultural event that brings Borgofranco d'Ivrea—a town in the Metropolitan City of Turin, nestled in the heart of the Canavese—to life every late March. For three days, the town becomes a hub for enthusiasts of the Piedmontese language, local literature, and the folk traditions of this corner of Piedmont at the foot of the Aosta Valley.
The festival revolves around a central theme that changes each year, focusing on the forgotten figures of Piedmontese culture: poets, writers, playwrights, and librettists who shaped the region's history but have been partially overlooked by the general public. Each edition rediscovers and honors these protagonists through book launches, critical editions, translations, and tributes.
The festival is held at the Cittadella della Cultura Canavesana, located in the historic building on Via dei Ribelli in Baio Dora, a hamlet of Borgofranco d'Ivrea. This site preserves the memory of the Canavese region and, alongside literary meetings, hosts photographic exhibitions, the evocative "Old Dairy" (Vecchia latteria) featuring traditional cheesemaking tools, and an ethnographic collection curated by the Centro Etnologico Canavesano.
The program blends various artistic forms: book presentations in Piedmontese with Italian translations, theatrical performances by local companies, folk music featuring the renowned Coro Bajolese, photographic exhibitions, guided tours of the famous Balmetti di Baio Dora, and social gatherings with tastings of local products and Canavese wines.
Promoted by the Cittadella della Cultura Popolare in collaboration with the Coro Bajolese, the Centro Etnologico Canavesano, and Edizioni Pedrini, with the patronage of the Municipality of Borgofranco d'Ivrea and the Metropolitan City of Turin, the Piedmontese Literary Festival is an unmissable stop for anyone wishing to experience the cultural soul of the Canavese and Piedmont.
The 5th edition of the Piedmontese Literary Festival, themed "Forgotten Figures of Piedmont", animated the Cittadella della Cultura Canavesana in Baio Dora from March 27 to 29, 2026, rediscovering two great protagonists of Piedmontese culture: the poet Nino Costa, celebrated for the 140th anniversary of his birth, and the Canavese librettist and playwright Giuseppe Giacosa, remembered 120 years after his death.
Through book presentations in the Piedmontese language, theatrical performances, folk music, and exhibitions, this edition confirmed the festival as a landmark event for the culture of the Canavese and Piedmont.
The festival takes place at the Cittadella della Cultura Canavesana, on Via dei Ribelli, in the Baio Dora hamlet of Borgofranco d'Ivrea (TO). The town is easily accessible via the A5 Turin-Aosta motorway (Ivrea exit) and by train via the Chivasso-Aosta line, getting off at the Borgofranco d'Ivrea station.
Festival events are generally free of charge. For the complete and updated program, please visit the organizers' website.
