About Piazza Lante Carnival

Every year, during the height of Carnival week, Piazza Federico Marcello Lante fills with confetti, streamers, and costumes. This is the Carnival Festival organized by the Ardeatino-Tormarancia Neighborhood Committee, one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Rome's Municipio VIII. It is a free, open-air afternoon designed specifically for the neighborhood's children and families, transforming the square into a large community gathering space filled with games, music, and traditional Roman sweets.

A Carnival born from the neighborhood

The Piazza Lante Carnival Festival is one of those events that captures the everyday face of Rome better than anything else: not a postcard-perfect parade, but a street party built by residents, for residents. It is organized by the Ardeatino-Tormarancia Neighborhood Committee, an active association within the Municipio VIII of the Municipality of Rome, which has recently brought the square back to the center of community life through cultural, civic, and children's initiatives.

The event takes place in Piazza Federico Marcello Lante, the square that provides access to the large Tor Marancia Park, in the southern part of the city between Ardeatina, Montagnola, and Garbatella. The festival is part of the official Carnival program for Municipio VIII, which animates dozens of squares, schools, and parks in the area during the same week.

What to find in the square

The afternoon is designed around the neighborhood's children and families. The formula, simple and tested by Roman neighborhood parties, combines:

  • costumes and masks, with the little ones as the absolute stars of the square;
  • entertainment and outdoor games managed by the Committee's volunteers;
  • music and dancing playing throughout the square for the duration of the festival;
  • confetti and streamers, which remain the true symbols of the Roman street Carnival;
  • traditional sweets: frappe (or chiacchiere) and castagnole, essential at every Carnival in the Lazio region.

Admission is free and the initiative is completely cost-free: it is a self-financed festival by the neighborhood, supported by the Municipality.

Carnival in Municipio VIII

The Piazza Lante festival is not an isolated event. During the same week, Municipio VIII offers a widespread calendar that includes school parades, the Grotta Perfetta Carnival in Piazza Bargellini, the Choral Carnival Parade from Piazza dei Navigatori, the Anti-Racist Carnival between Parco della Garbatella and Parco Schuster, the Montagnola Carnival, and children's workshops hosted at the I Granai shopping center. Visitors to the neighborhood during these days can easily create a small itinerary across multiple squares.

Tor Marancia, a neighborhood to discover

Participating in the festival is also an opportunity to get to know a side of Rome far from tourist circuits. Tor Marancia is famous for Big City Life, the open-air street art museum created on the facades of the public housing buildings on Viale di Tor Marancia, and for the nearby Tenuta di Tor Marancia, a green area of great natural and archaeological value that extends toward the Appian Way. A few minutes away are the Garbatella, a 1920s garden-suburb, and the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls.

Why it is worth visiting

In a capital where the Carnival does not have a single, centralized event like in Venice or Viareggio, it is the neighborhood committees that keep the celebration alive. The Piazza Lante Carnival Festival is one of these bastions: small, free, family-friendly, and deeply rooted in the social fabric of the Lazio Region. Those looking for the authentic atmosphere of a Roman Sunday in the square, rather than a grand spectacle, will find it here.
