The widespread piano festival in the heart of Sulmona
Piano Piano per Sulmona is the festival that, every summer, turns the historic center of Sulmona — the city of Ovid in the Peligna Valley, in the province of L'Aquila — into a musical trail. From Corso Nord to Corso Sud, passing through Corso Ovidio and the most charming squares, the city becomes a stage: piano concerts, dance, art exhibitions, and performances animate the courtyards of historic palaces and the spaces at the foot of monuments, in a continuous dialogue between music and heritage.
The core identity of the event is the widespread piano concept: instruments placed in public spaces, open to both scheduled performances and spontaneous playing. Along Corso Ovidio, you will find an upright piano and the distinctive piano-bike, which has been the symbol of the festival since its very first edition: anyone can sit and play, whether they are citizens, visitors, professionals, or simply enthusiasts.
Piano Piano per Sulmona is organized by Muntagninjazz APS, the association from Introdacqua that has been bringing live music to the villages and landscapes of Central Abruzzo since 2006. The Sulmona festival is the grand finale of the Muntagninjazz festival, which in 2026 celebrates its twentieth anniversary with a month of concerts spread across ten municipalities. Although it is the concluding event of the festival, Piano Piano per Sulmona has its own distinct identity and has become a hallmark of the city.
The festival is completely free and designed to make music accessible to an ever-wider audience. Over the years, it has featured dozens of musical stations, pianos placed throughout the city, and concerts and performances with hundreds of artists, in a program that blends big names from the Italian music scene with emerging young talents. All this is set against the backdrop of Sulmona's historic center, between the Palazzo della Ss. Annunziata, Piazza XX Settembre, and the city's bustling streets.
The 2026 edition of Piano Piano per Sulmona — the tenth — takes place on August 21 and 22 and concludes the Muntagninjazz festival in the year of its twentieth anniversary. The historic center of Sulmona transforms into a widespread musical trail, from Corso Nord to Corso Sud, with piano concerts, dance, art exhibitions, and performances in the courtyards of historic palaces and at the foot of monuments.
Among the protagonists, Daniele Sepe performs on August 21, while Dirotta su Cuba headlines the closing concert on August 22 in Piazza XX Settembre. Along Corso Ovidio, the upright piano and the piano-bike return as the symbols of the festival: anyone can sit and play.
The festival is part of the twentieth anniversary of Muntagninjazz (July 23 - August 22, 2026), with a program spread across ten municipalities in Central Abruzzo. As an opening, from August 15 to 19, Piazza XX Settembre hosts several free evenings dedicated to new generations, funk, folk music, blues, and world music.
