Floats, costumes, and awards in Piazza Indipendenza, in the heart of the Cicolano region
The Petrella Salto Carnival is one of the most popular events in the winter calendar of the Municipality of Petrella Salto, in the province of Rieti, Lazio. This is not a monumental carnival like those in Viareggio or Venice: here, the scale is that of a village, and that is precisely its charm. On the afternoon of Carnival Saturday, Piazza Indipendenza becomes the gathering point for allegorical floats built in the preceding weeks and dozens of costumed participants—both children and adults—who then parade together through the town center.
The structure of the festival is well-established and intentionally simple. In the early afternoon, the floats and costumed groups gather in the square; about an hour later, the parade begins, accompanied by music and followed by an audience that often includes the entire community. The final part of the afternoon is dedicated to the awards ceremony—recognizing the best floats and costumes—and a reception open to everyone, a convivial moment that brings the day to a close.
The organization is entirely handled by the Pro Loco of Petrella Salto, an association active in local development and tourism promotion. Participation in the parade is open to anyone who wishes to sign up by contacting the association: it is a grassroots festival, where the preparation of floats and costumes involves families, groups of friends, and the local school in the weeks leading up to the event. At the end of the most recent edition, the Pro Loco publicly thanked the community, highlighting how it was the citizens themselves, both young and old, whose enthusiasm gave value and meaning to the initiative.
Petrella Salto is located in the heart of the Cicolano, the mountainous area of the Rieti province that stretches between Lake Salto and the peaks of the Central Apennines. It is a land of scattered villages, castles, and water landscapes, dominated by the ruins of the fortress overlooking the town and linked to the memory of Beatrice Cenci. The Carnival is part of a calendar of events that mark the community's year, from Christmas initiatives for children to summer activities promoting the area, all organized by the Pro Loco.
Those looking for an authentic carnival, far from the major tourist crowds, will find a village festival that has kept its true character. The atmosphere is that of a shared celebration: colorful costumes, music, laughter, and genuine joy that involves spectators just as much as participants. It is also a great excuse to discover a lesser-known corner of Lazio in winter, between the shores of Lake Salto and the small towns of the Cicolano, where popular tradition remains a living practice rather than a staged performance for visitors.
On Saturday, February 14, 2026, Petrella Salto was filled with costumes, music, and smiles for its Carnival, promoted by the Pro Loco of Petrella Salto. The meeting point was set for 2:30 PM in Piazza Indipendenza, where allegorical floats and walking groups gathered; the parade through the village streets began at 3:30 PM.
In the late afternoon, the awards ceremony for the best floats and costumes took place, followed by a final reception. Participation was open to everyone upon registration with the Pro Loco. At the end of the day, the association publicly thanked the community: according to the organizers, it was the citizens themselves, with their enthusiasm, who gave value and meaning to the initiative, in an afternoon of authentic joy and sharing.
Registration for floats and costumed groups is available at the Pro Loco of Petrella Salto.
Petrella Salto can be reached by car from Rieti (about 40 km) along the SS578 Salaria per l'Adriatico towards Lake Salto, or from Avezzano through the Cicolano area. The nearest train station is in Rieti; the reference airport is Rome Fiumicino, about a two-hour drive away.
The gathering and the parade take place in Piazza Indipendenza and along the streets of the center. During the event, traffic in the center may be restricted: it is advisable to leave your car in the parking areas on the outskirts of the village and continue on foot.
Watching the parade is free. To participate with an allegorical float or a costumed group, you must register with the Pro Loco of Petrella Salto in the days leading up to the event.
This is an outdoor afternoon event in the middle of winter in a mountain town: it is recommended to wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes. The festival is particularly suitable for families with children.
