The Indulgence of the Porziuncola, a gift from Saint Francis
The Perdono di Assisi, also known as the Indulgence of the Porziuncola, is one of the most beloved spiritual observances in the Franciscan calendar. It all began in 1216, when Saint Francis, according to tradition, obtained from Pope Honorius III the concession of a plenary indulgence for anyone, repentant and confessed, who crossed the threshold of the Porziuncola.
The Porziuncola is the small chapel that Saint Francis loved more than any other place and that he restored with his own hands. Today it is housed within the monumental Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built around it, in Santa Maria degli Angeli, a fraction of Assisi (Province of Perugia). It is here that the flow of pilgrims concentrates, in a place that is both the spiritual heart and the cradle of the Franciscan movement.
From 12:00 PM on August 1st until midnight on August 2nd, the faculty to gain the indulgence of the Porziuncola โ granted here all year round โ extends to all parish and Franciscan churches worldwide. But it is in Assisi and at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli that the observance is experienced in its most intense form, with thousands of faithful who, through confession and Eucharistic communion, renew the spiritual meaning of the Forgiveness.
The Perdono di Assisi 2026 takes place on August 1st and 2nd in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, around the Porziuncola. The festival begins on the morning of August 1st and concludes on the evening of August 2nd: from 12:00 PM on August 1st to 12:00 AM on August 2nd, the faculty to obtain the indulgence extends to all parish and Franciscan churches worldwide.
In Assisi, the observance attracts thousands of pilgrims. To gain the plenary indulgence, confession, Eucharistic communion, and prayer according to the Pope's intentions are required. The detailed liturgical calendar of the celebrations is published by the Friars Minor on the website porziuncola.org.
