The historical re-enactment of the 1559 peace treaty across the four districts of Teramo

The Peace Festival is one of the most cherished traditions in Teramo, the capital of the province of the same name in Abruzzo. Its roots go back to March 1559, when the city, torn apart by long-standing conflicts between noble families and strained by the tensions of the Tronto War, finally found harmony through a peace initiative. The noblewomen of Teramo, supported by Bishop Giacomo Silveri Piccolomini and with the backing of the authorities of the Kingdom of Naples, convinced the grieving houses to abandon their vendettas and sign a pact of reconciliation.
The heart of the event is the historical re-enactment, featuring a procession in period costumes that winds through the city center. The four historic districts of Teramo — San Giorgio, Santa Maria Bitetto, San Leonardo, and Santo Spirito — parade with their banners, figures in Renaissance attire, and the 'Pacere' (Peacemakers), the symbolic protagonists of the reconciliation. The procession starts from the heart of the historic center and travels through the main streets to the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, where the evocative offering of the candle takes place, a gesture that seals the message of peace.
The commemorative aspect is complemented by religious traditions: celebrations involve the Cathedral of Teramo, dedicated to Saint Berardo, with a solemn ceremony accompanying the entry of the Pacere into the Cathedral. The Peace Festival is not just a historical spectacle, but a moment when the Teramo community gathers around the values of justice, responsibility, and solidarity, reaffirmed each year by city institutions as a daily commitment rather than just a memory of the past.
After centuries of celebrations, the festival was revived in 1993 thanks to the efforts of the cultural association Teramo Nostra, which oversees the organization of the procession, costumes, and ceremonies every year. Over time, the event has been enriched with side initiatives — flag-waver performances, competitions dedicated to the theme of peace, and cultural moments — that strengthen its bond with the local area and new generations. The Peace Festival thus confirms itself as a key identity element of the historical and cultural heritage of Teramo and Abruzzo.
The 2026 Peace Festival will return to enliven the historic center of Teramo with the re-enactment of the 1559 reconciliation. At the moment, the official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been communicated: the event is traditionally held during the Easter period, featuring the procession of the four historic districts, the candle offering at the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, and the ceremony in the Cathedral. The detailed program will be announced by the Teramo Nostra association and the Municipality of Teramo in the weeks leading up to the event.
Teramo can be reached by car via the A24 motorway (Rome-Teramo) and the A14, taking the Teramo/Giulianova exit connected by the Teramo-Mare highway. The Teramo train station is served by the line coming from Giulianova, on the Adriatic coast.
The procession and ceremonies are held in the historic center of Teramo, between the main streets, the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, and the Cathedral (Duomo di San Berardo).
Participation in the procession and ceremonies is free and open to everyone.
The event traditionally takes place during the Easter period, in the afternoon: it is advisable to check the updated date and times with the Teramo Nostra association or the Municipality of Teramo before planning your visit.
