The patronal feast in the village of Paterno di Campli
In the Campli summer calendar, there is an appointment that smells of tradition and belonging: the Celebrations in Honor of Saint Donatus the Martyr, which every year on August 7th enliven the charming village of Paterno, a hamlet of the Municipality of Campli, in the province of Teramo, in the heart of the Teramo Abruzzo region.
Paterno is one of those small centers that keeps the charm of Abruzzese villages intact: 18th and 19th-century buildings with small lamp brackets on the sides of the windows, covered pedestrian passages between the houses, and, on the edge of the town, the Church of Saint Donatus Bishop and Martyr. It is here, among these alleys, that the community renews its devotion to its patron saint every year.
The day is organized by the Villa Paterno nel Cuore Association, a group composed of residents and those originally from the village, whose goal is to keep the small hamlet alive. Thanks to their commitment, as per ancient tradition, Paterno comes back to life for a full day of celebration, capable of attracting local families and those who have left Paterno but have never forgotten their roots.
The festival combines two souls that have always been intertwined: the religious one, with liturgical moments dedicated to Saint Donatus, and the civil and popular one, made of gatherings, music, and conviviality in the village squares. It is the classic formula of an Abruzzese patronal feast, where the sacred and the community walk side by side.
The Saint Donatus celebrations are part of the rich Campli Summer program, the festival promoted by the Municipality of Campli which, from June to September, brings concerts, food festivals, shows, sporting events, and religious appointments to the entire municipal territory and its hamlets. Experiencing the Paterno festival therefore means immersing yourself in the atmosphere of a lively Campli summer that is deeply tied to its roots.
For Campli, one of the most beautiful villages in Abruzzo and famous for its Holy Stairs and porchetta, village festivals like the one in Paterno are a precious piece of a territorial identity made of small communities that still know how to gather around their own traditions.
The date for the 2026 edition is confirmed: Friday, August 7th, the village of Paterno di Campli celebrates its patron Saint Donatus the Martyr. The event is included in the official Campli Summer 2026 program, the summer calendar of the Municipality of Campli.
