Three days of faith, art, music, and tradition in honor of Saint Paul, Saint Nicholas, and Saint Anthony of Padua
In the heart of inland Abruzzo, on the Navelli plateau and just a stone's throw from the Roman ruins of Peltuinum, the municipality of Prata d'Ansidonia (Province of L'Aquila) renews its Patronal Festivals every year at the end of June. The event is dedicated to Saint Paul, Saint Nicholas, and Saint Anthony of Padua and remains one of the most cherished traditions for the community, drawing families, emigrants, and visitors from neighboring villages back to the town.
The religious heart of the festival is marked by processions and Eucharistic celebrations. A particularly evocative moment is the procession to the Church of Saint Paul, a medieval building linked to the ancient Roman city of Peltuinum, accompanied by the blessing of the fields: a ritual that recalls the village's deep bond with the land, transhumance, and the agriculture of the plateau. Brass bands, including the Banda Musicale dell'Aterno and the Banda Musicale Armonie Sentine, accompany the parades through the village streets.
Alongside the spiritual dimension, the evenings offer musical entertainment with ballroom orchestras and concerts dedicated to the great classics of Italian music, art exhibitions set up in rooms adjacent to the square, popular tournaments such as briscola, foosball, and table tennis, as well as essential entertainment for children. The food stalls offer the typical flavors of the L'Aquila hinterland, including rustic soups, cheeses, and dishes based on grains and legumes.
Experiencing the Patronal Festivals also means discovering Prata d'Ansidonia and its hamlets, a territory where the Roman vestiges of Peltuinum, the medieval architecture of Castel Camponeschi, and ancient stone churches coexist. The festival, closed by traditional fireworks, remains a moment of strong collective identity for this authentic corner of the Abruzzo mountains.
The 2026 edition brought Prata d'Ansidonia to life for three days, from June 26 to 28, with a program combining religious celebrations and entertainment. Friday marked the official opening with fireworks, the inauguration of the food stalls, and a dance evening with the Orchestra Spettacolo. Saturday featured religious celebrations with the procession to the Church of Saint Paul, the Eucharistic celebration, and the blessing of the fields accompanied by the band, along with an art exhibition and popular tournaments. Sunday saw the grand finale with the celebration in honor of Saint Nicholas and Saint Anthony, the procession through the village streets, and the spectacular closing fireworks display.
