The patronal feast of Ferragosto in the heart of the Gran Sasso
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Feast of Saint Mary of the Assumption and Saint Roch is the most attended event in Barisciano, a municipality in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, nestled among the peaks of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Every year, in mid-August, the village unites in Marian devotion and the cult of Saint Roch, in a celebration where religious observance blends with civic and social festivities.
The festival traditionally takes place on August 14th, 15th, and 16th. August 15th, the day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and August 16th, dedicated to Saint Roch, mark the heart of the celebrations. It is a fixed-date event tied to the Ferragosto liturgical calendar, drawing residents, families, and emigrants back to the village for the occasion.
The day of August 15th traditionally begins in the early morning with fireworks. In the late morning, at the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Valleverdeโan ancient site of Marian worshipโa solemn Eucharistic celebration is held, preceded by the reading of the Miracle of Valleverde, the account of the apparition that gave rise to local devotion. The statue of the Madonna is then carried in procession through the village streets, accompanied by the faithful.
On August 16th, the festival follows the same pattern, this time in honor of Saint Roch, the patron saint invoked against the plague: two masses, the procession, musical accompaniment by the brass band, the recitation of the Rosary along the Via Mariana, and fireworks once again. The cult of Saint Roch in Barisciano has its roots in the 16th-century plague epidemic, a memory also tied to the church dedicated to the saint, built next to the village castle.
Alongside the liturgical rites, the festivities have a popular and joyful heart. The three evenings feature music in the square, performances, and dance evenings that animate the historic center until late at night. The brass band accompanies processions and civic moments, while pyrotechnic displays bring the festive days to a spectacular close.
Experiencing the festival is also an opportunity to discover Barisciano and its surroundings: a mountain village just a few kilometers from L'Aquila, immersed in the Gran Sasso landscape, among plateaus, trails, and Abruzzese gastronomic traditions. The Feast of the Assumption and Saint Roch represents the moment when the community renews its identity and welcomes visitors and pilgrims into the heart of the Abruzzese summer.
The Feast of Saint Mary of the Assumption and Saint Roch returns to Barisciano, in the province of L'Aquila, during the Ferragosto period. As of the date of writing, the Municipality and the Festival Committee have not yet released the official calendar for the 2026 edition: the festival traditionally takes place on August 14th, 15th, and 16th, with celebrations at the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Valleverde, processions, a brass band, dance evenings, and fireworks. The full program will be updated as soon as it is made public.
Barisciano can be reached by car from the L'Aquila Est exit (A24 motorway), about 15 km from the provincial capital along the SS17 road. The reference train station is L'Aquila, which is connected to the village by bus lines.
