The great September festival in the Fortore village: processions, brass bands, food stalls, and fireworks
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
There are places where the calendar is measured not in months, but in festivals, and in Baselice, the moment everyone waits for falls at the beginning of September. In this municipality in the Province of Benevento, at the northern edge of Campania, the Patronal Feast of the Madonna delle Grazie is both a devotional appointment and the village's great collective occasion: the square fills up, houses reopen, those living far away return for a few days to find the same voices, the same scents, and the same brass band accompanying the statue through the streets.
Baselice has just under 2,000 inhabitants and stands at an altitude of 620 meters on undulating terrain ranging from 303 to 966 meters, on the left side of the Fortore river, between it and its tributary, the Cervaro. It is a landscape of ridges, clay gullies, cereal fields, and olive groves: a corner of the Sannio region bordering Molise and Puglia that still relies on agriculture, with wine, olive oil, and fruit among its products, and a local Moscato that is the true oenological pride of the area. Visitors arriving for the festival discover a piece of inland Campania that is very different from the coast: quiet, green, and with wide horizons.
The Madonna delle Grazie has been venerated in Baselice for centuries as the community's protector. The cult is linked to the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, one of the village's historic religious buildings, which houses the tomb of the feudal lord Ottavio Carafa. The September celebrations are traditionally intertwined with those in honor of Saint Lucy: local sources speak of "solemn festivities in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie and Saint Lucy," which have historically centered around Piazza Convento. The official patron saint of the town remains Saint Leonard the Abbot, whose feast day falls on November 6th; however, the Marian festival in September is the one that, in terms of participation and public program, truly defines the Baselice summer.
The format, repeated with few variations from year to year, combines liturgy and public celebration:
In the most elaborate editions, the public program has extended over several days, featuring a morning fair, a dessert competition, cheese and Moscato tastings, festivals dedicated to cavatelli and sausage, and a major final concert. In 2011, for example, the festivities ran from September 7th to 10th and brought well-known Italian performers to the village, while on September 10, 2024, the famous band Nomadi performed a free concert in Piazza Convento.
This is not a festival built for tourists, and that is precisely why it is interesting: here, the procession is not a re-enactment but a lived act of faith; the stalls are not a street food festival but the kitchens of the organizing committee and local families; and the music in the square serves to bring three generations together until late at night. For those visiting the Benevento Fortore area, it is the best opportunity to see the village in its most vibrant version, taste the peasant cuisine of the Sannio, and understand how important the bond between Marian devotion, local identity, and the return of emigrants is in these inland Campanian towns.
At the moment, no official calendar has been published for the 2026 Feast of the Madonna delle Grazie in Baselice, and the municipal website does not list any scheduled events. However, the festival is a permanent fixture of the village: the last documented edition took place on September 8, 2025, and in previous years, the festivities in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie and Saint Lucy have spanned several days in early September, with Piazza Convento as the main stage.
Based on past editions, the program is expected to alternate liturgical celebrations, the procession of the statue through the historic center with a brass band, concerts and evening shows, stalls featuring peasant cuisine from the Fortore, and a final fireworks display. Dates and the detailed program will be updated as soon as they are released by the organizers; it is advisable to check with the parish or the Municipality of Baselice (tel. +39 0824 968066) before traveling.
The celebrations are held in the historic center of Baselice (82020), between the parish church and Piazza Convento, the usual venue for evening concerts and shows.
Baselice is not served by rail. It can be reached by car along the provincial roads of the Fortore, exiting from the SS 369 or SS 17 towards San Bartolomeo in Galdo. From Benevento, it takes about an hour of driving through hilly terrain; travel times from Campobasso and the Apulian Tavoliere are similar. Free parking is available in areas on the outskirts of the center; on festival evenings, it is advisable to arrive early, as the village streets are closed to traffic.
Religious rites, the procession, and performances in the square are traditionally free of charge (the 2024 concert in Piazza Convento was free). Only food and drink at the stalls and any children's attractions require payment.
Bring a light jacket: at an altitude of 620 meters, September evenings can get chilly. Accommodation in the village is limited, so for overnight stays, it is best to look in San Bartolomeo in Galdo, Foiano di Val Fortore, or the local farmhouses (agriturismi) in the valley. For updated dates and programs, you can contact the Municipality of Baselice (Via Santa Maria 83, tel. +39 0824 968066) or follow the social media channels of the Municipality and the parish.
