In Villa Literno, a town in the province of Caserta in Campania, August 15th is more than just the peak of the summer holidays: it is the day the town gathers around Santa Maria Assunta, the patron of its main church. The Feast of the Assumption is one of the most cherished events in the local calendar, filling the historic center with worshippers, families, and those who return home specifically for Ferragosto.

The format follows the classic tradition of Southern patronal feasts: an intense, participatory liturgical program paired with a secular celebration of music, lights, and local flavors that continues late into the night.

The main church of Santa Maria Assunta

The heart of the celebration is the main church of Santa Maria Assunta on Via Chiesa, in the town center. The parish dates back to 1560, when it was known as S. Maria del Castello di Vico Pantano, while the current building dates to the early 19th century and was partially rebuilt during the 1800s. Inside, the three-nave Latin cross layout is defined by sturdy pillars and round arches leading to the transept, above which the dome rises. The parish belongs to the Diocese of Aversa, in the pastoral zone of Casal di Principe.

For the occasion, the church is decorated and illuminated, and festive lights create arches of brilliance along the streets leading to the churchyard: a display that signals to every visitor that the town is in celebration.

The day of August 15th

The religious program revolves around two main moments:

• The solemn mass in the main church, celebrated with the participation of religious and civil authorities;
• The procession with the statue of the Madonna Assunta, which travels through the town streets accompanied by the faithful, confraternities, the marching band, and festive lights.

Surrounding these events are moments of collective prayer, religious hymns, and blessings. The passage of the statue is the most emotional moment of the day: decorated balconies, applause as the statue passes, and processional marches performed by the band.

The secular festival: music, lights, and flavors

Alongside the liturgical program, the festival traditionally offers secular initiatives that bring the square and the streets of the center to life: concerts and live music in the evening, food stalls with Campanian specialties, craft booths, sweets, entertainment for children, and a fireworks display to close the day.

Street food plays a special role: the scent of fried pizza and freshly baked bread fills the alleys, while stalls offer taralli, nougat, peanuts, and the classic treats of village fairs. It is a festival to be experienced on foot, walking and meeting acquaintances at every corner.

San Tammaro, the other devotional event

It is worth noting that the patron saint of Villa Literno is San Tammaro, celebrated on January 16th and the second Sunday of September with a separate, multi-day patronal feast. However, the Assumption feast on August 15th remains one of the most attended celebrations in the local calendar, tied as it is to the dedication of the main church and the symbolic date of the Italian summer.

Villa Literno and the Volturno Plain

Villa Literno is located in the plains north of Naples, in the Agro Aversano territory and close to the Volturno Plain, an area of ancient agricultural tradition known for vegetables, fruit, and especially tomato cultivation. Not far away lies the Domitian coast and the archaeological site of Liternum, the ancient Roman colony that gave the town its name and where, according to tradition, Publio Cornelio Scipione l'Africano retired. Those visiting the festival can combine their Ferragosto day with an excursion through Roman archaeology and the Caserta countryside.

When to go

The date is set by the liturgical calendar: August 15th, the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary. We recommend arriving in the late afternoon to attend the solemn mass and the procession, then staying in the square for the evening festivities.
