The Patronal Feast of Carbognano

At the end of May, the small village of Carbognano, in the province of Viterbo, gathers around its two patron saints, Sant'Eutizio and San Filippo Neri. The patronal feast is one of the most anticipated moments of the year for the community: two days where religious devotion blends with the town's history, the music of the band, and the conviviality of the squares. Organized by the parish of San Pietro Apostolo, with the involvement of the local Pro Loco, the celebrations attract residents, families originally from the village, and visitors from the Tuscia region.

Sant'Eutizio and San Filippo Neri, the patrons

Sant'Eutizio was a Christian priest and martyr from Ferento, near Viterbo, who was beheaded around the year 270 during the persecutions. Deeply linked to the Tuscia territory, he is traditionally depicted with ears of wheat, according to the legend of the "miracle of the wheat." He is joined by San Filippo Neri, the famous Florentine priest and founder of the Oratory, remembered as the "saint of joy," whose liturgical feast falls on May 26th. The union of the two saints in the devotion of Carbognano gives the feast a character that is both austere and festive.

The procession and the band

The heart of the celebrations is the solemn procession: the statues of the patron saints are carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the town's brass band and the participation of the faithful. Around the time of the feast, and particularly during the Gavinella Festival, food stands and gatherings in the square allow visitors to savor this symbolic dish of Carbognano's popular cuisine, accompanied by music and dancing.
