Sant'Antonio, San Marcellino, and the Sacred Heart: three days of devotion and music in the heart of Irpinia

The Luogosano Patronal Feast does not celebrate just one saint, but three devotions that the community has chosen to unite into a single summer cycle: Sant'Antonio, San Marcellino—the town's patron saint, whose liturgical feast falls on June 2nd—and the Sacred Heart. This is a common practice in Irpinian villages, where the main celebration is moved to August to coincide with the return of emigrants and families living away for the rest of the year. The result is an event that, for three days, multiplies the population of this town of just over a thousand inhabitants.
According to archival records of festivals in the province of Avellino, the celebrations in honor of Sant'Antonio, San Marcellino, and the Sacred Heart take place in Luogosano on August 11th, 12th, and 13th. Each day is dedicated to one of the three devotions, alternating morning and late afternoon liturgical services with evening festivities. Falling just before Ferragosto, the feast sits within the most intense week of the Irpinian summer, when dozens of towns in the Calore and Ufita valleys host their own programs of festivals and patronal feasts.
The spiritual heart of the feast is the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Marcellino in Piazza Giovanni XXIII, a building that preserves a Renaissance baptismal font and Roman-era architectural elements reused in its structure. The parish traces its roots back to the Lombard monastery of Santa Maria di Locosano, documented between the 7th and 11th centuries, which marks the very origin of the settlement. The devotion to the Sacred Heart is also linked to the historic Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, established in 1782. During the feast, the town is adorned with lights, and the statues of the saints are carried in procession through the streets of the historic center, among the low stone houses and wrought-iron balconies that characterize the old core.
Alongside the devotional aspect, there is a secular program managed by the festival committee and the Municipality: market stalls, artistic illuminations, and, above all, evening music in the square. In the 2025 edition, the lineup featured a free concert by Massimo Di Cataldo on Monday, August 11th, as part of the circuit of major free concerts in the Campanian summer. This is a recurring element of Irpinian patronal feasts: a well-known name from the Italian pop music scene is invited to close the main evening, attracting audiences from neighboring towns as well.
Luogosano sits at an altitude of 390 meters, covering just over six square kilometers, about thirty kilometers from Avellino. The toponym tells a story: the area was anciently called "acquaputrida" (putrid water) and the name was changed to "Luogo sano" (healthy place) to convey a more favorable image. The town is immersed in vineyards and is included in the Taurasi DOCG area, the great red wine made from Aglianico grapes that represents the oenological excellence of Irpinia, as well as being part of the Irpinia Colline dell'Ufita PDO olive oil zone. Historical landmarks include Palazzo Venuti, a feudal-era Renaissance tower, and the ruins of a 1st-2nd century AD Roman bridge with a necropolis along the banks of the Calore river.
The August feast is the most popular, but not the only one. The municipal calendar in the province of Avellino and the Campania region also includes:
Those looking for a Southern Italian patronal feast in its most authentic version—not staged for tourism but lived by the community—will find a perfect scale in Luogosano: a small village, one square, and three days where the whole town participates. The combination of processions, illuminations, free evening concerts, and Irpinian cuisine makes the event an excellent starting point for discovering the Calore Valley in August, perhaps combining the visit with a stop at the Taurasi wineries.
For 2026, neither the official dates nor the program for the Luogosano patronal feast in the province of Avellino have been published yet. The Municipality's website does not list any events for the summer period, and the event does not appear in the main provincial concert and festival listings for the Irpinian summer.
The traditional reference remains that indicated by the archives of the province of Avellino, which place the celebrations of Sant'Antonio, San Marcellino, and the Sacred Heart in mid-August. In the summer of 2025, the feast took place during that period, with a free concert on Monday, August 11th.
While awaiting the official announcement, those planning a trip can contact the Municipality of Luogosano directly (tel. +39 0827 402750) or the parish of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Marcellino. This page will be updated with dates, processions, and the musical program as soon as the festival committee releases the flyer.
Luogosano (AV), 83040, Campania Region. The celebrations take place in the historic center and at the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Marcellino, in Piazza Giovanni XXIII.
By car: from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Grottaminarda or Avellino Est exit, then follow provincial roads towards the Calore Valley; the town is about 30 km from Avellino. By train: the reference stations are Benevento or Avellino, from where you can continue by bus or car. By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about 90 km away.
Religious celebrations and evening events at Irpinian patronal feasts are traditionally free of charge; the 2025 concert was free.
The town is small: it is best to park at the entrance and continue on foot. For accommodation, there are farmhouses and wineries offering hospitality in the nearby towns of the Taurasi area. In August, evenings in the hills can be cool: a light jacket is useful.
