About Feast of Saint Sebastian

Every January 20th, Ferentillo celebrates its patron saint, Saint Sebastian, a martyr from the 3rd century. The feast has its roots in an ancient plague, from which the town was saved, according to tradition, thanks to the intercession of the saint who was carried in procession. Amidst the ringing of bells, the solemn mass, and the procession with the relic, devotion is renewed in the heart of the Valnerina.

Saint Sebastian, Patron Saint of Ferentillo

January 20th is the liturgical day of Saint Sebastian, a 3rd-century martyr and patron saint of Ferentillo, in the Terni Valnerina. The patronal feast renews a deep bond between the community and its saint, also celebrated in August, on the anniversary of the miracle that – according to tradition – saved the people of Ferentillo from the plague.

The Memory of the Plague

Tradition tells that, during an epidemic, the town was freed from contagion thanks to the intercession of Saint Sebastian, carried in procession through the village streets. From this event arises the evocative "Procession of the Plague-Stricken," with costumed figures, which particularly characterizes the summer celebrations in August.

The Celebrations of January 20th

The January feast has a predominantly religious character: it opens with the ringing of bells by the Ferentillo Bell Ringers Group, continues with the solemn mass in the "Mother" Church of Santa Maria, and culminates with the procession of the relic of the patron saint through the village streets, bringing Saint Sebastian's blessing and protection to the entire community. An event of faith and identity in the heart of the Umbrian winter.
