Procession and blessing of the fires in the Lucanian village
Saint Nicholas of Bari is the patron saint of Brindisi Montagna, a small village in the Province of Potenza overlooking the Basento valley. Its Mother Church, in the heart of the historic centre opposite the Town Hall, is dedicated to the saint himself, one of the most venerated figures in Southern Italy.
The celebrations are concentrated in May. The main day, May 8th, features a procession with the patron saint's statue through the village streets, during which the faithful place their offerings. The most evocative moment is the blessing of the fires: the saint blesses the bonfires lit along the route, an ancient propitiatory rite for good luck for the community.
On May 9th, the feast continues with a second procession of the saint's bust, while a further commemoration is celebrated on December 6th, the liturgical day of Saint Nicholas.
Between faith and popular tradition, the feast of Saint Nicholas represents one of the most heartfelt moments for the small community of Brindisi Montagna, an occasion for residents and emigrants to reunite in the village. It is also an opportunity for visitors to discover an authentic corner of inland Basilicata, a few kilometres from the famous Parco della Grancia.
For 2026, the festivities in honour of Saint Nicholas of Bari in Brindisi Montagna are expected on May 8th and 9th. May 8th features the procession of the patron saint with the collection of offerings and the blessing of the fires; May 9th includes a second procession with the saint's bust through the village streets.
