The patronal feast of Veglie, blending devotion, ancient rites, brass bands, and concerts in the heart of Salento
The Patronal Feast of Saint John the Baptist is the most cherished event of the year for the community of Veglie, a town in the Salento region of Lecce, in the heart of Apulia. Every late June, the town celebrates its protector with a festival that blends religious devotion, ancient folk traditions, and a rich program of performances, turning the historic center into one large open-air stage.
The most solemn moment is the Eucharistic Concelebration at the Parish of SS. Giovanni Battista e Irene, followed by the procession with the statue of the Saint, which travels through the town streets accompanied by grand brass band concerts. The most evocative and identity-defining element of the feast is the ancient ritual of the Water of Saint John, which takes place on the morning of June 24th in Piazza Umberto I: a gesture passed down through generations, linked to rural beliefs regarding the healing and purifying power of water collected on the Saint's night.
As in all great Apulian patronal feasts, music plays a central role. The ornate bandstands host prestigious brass ensembles from Salento and Apulia, while traditional light displays illuminate the main streets and squares. Every evening, Piazza Umberto I and other town locations host live concerts and shows, ranging from Salento folk music to tribute bands and major national performers who close the festivities.
Alongside the religious and musical events, the festival offers the "Saporita – The Tasty Feast" gastronomic experience, dedicated to tasting local specialties, including the famous cassatina vegliese, a traditional local pastry. The historic center also hosts "The Way of Art", a widespread exhibition of art and crafts set up along Via San Giovanni, where artists and artisans display their works.
Organized by the Pro Loco Veglie APS together with the Municipality of Veglie and the parish, the festival attracts residents, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns. It is an authentic expression of Salento identity, where the sacred and the profane coexist in an atmosphere of shared joy that marks the beginning of summer in Veglie.
The 2026 edition brought a significant change: the festivities were extended from three to four days, from June 23rd to 26th. The program combined the sacred dimension with popular entertainment.
Tuesday, June 23rd: at 7:30 PM, solemn Eucharistic Concelebration at the Parish of SS. Giovanni Battista e Irene, followed by the procession with the "A. Reino" Grand Brass Band of Salento, City of Veglie, directed by Maestro Cosimo Costa; at 9:30 PM in Piazza Umberto I, a concert by Kardìa with guest Consuelo Alfieri, while the Blackout Trio performed on Via Dante.
Wednesday, June 24th (Saint's Day): at 9:00 AM, the traditional ritual of the Water of Saint John in Piazza Umberto I; musical matinée with the "Cadenza" Musical Association; in the evening, brass band concerts by the "Biagio Abbate" Grand Concert of the City of Bisceglie and the local Veglie ensemble, with the Baby Face U2 Tribute on Via Dante.
Thursday, June 25th: the Circus Salento Show in Piazza Umberto I and the acoustic duo of Alice De Paolis and Ludovico Mieli on Via Dante.
Friday, June 26th: grand finale with a concert by the Gemelli di Guidonia.
Throughout the festivities, the "Saporita – The Tasty Feast" festival and "The Way of Art" path enlivened the historic center.
The festivities take place in the historic center of Veglie (LE), centered around Piazza Umberto I, Via Dante, Via San Giovanni, and Piazza XXIV Maggio.
By car: Veglie is accessible via the SP4 and the Lecce ring road, about 25 km from the provincial capital. By train: the nearest stations are Lecce and Novoli, connected by local bus lines. Nearest airport: Brindisi-Casale, about 45 km away.
All square events, brass band concerts, and shows are free to attend. Tastings at the "Saporita" festival require payment for food and drinks.
