Lenola celebrates its patron saint on June 23rd and 24th with processions, confraternities, and deep-rooted popular devotion.
In Lenola, a village perched on the Ausoni Mountains in the province of Latina, the patronal feast of Saint John the Baptist is more than just a date on the calendar: it is the moment the community truly comes together. On June 24th, the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Baptist, the town dresses up for the occasion, families return from nearby cities, and the streets of the historic center fill with people until late in the evening.
The patronage of Saint John the Baptist over Lenola is ancient and coexists with the other great local devotion, that of the Madonna del Colle, whose sanctuary overlooks the town from above. The two traditions do not exclude each other; rather, they intertwine, and it is from the Marian sanctuary that the most solemn part of the patronal festivities begins.
The evening of June 23rd is dedicated to a prayer and fraternity meeting of the confraternities of the Archdiocese of Gaeta. The members, wearing their traditional robes and carrying banners, meet at the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Colle and descend in a procession toward the parish church, where the vigil mass of the Patron Saint is celebrated. Afterward, the Congregation of Saint John the Baptist hosts a fraternal agape, a convivial moment that concludes the evening and has become a much-anticipated event for all the local confraternities.
It is one of the most beautiful images of the festival: the colorful insignias of the confraternities moving along the hill road at sunset, with the landscape of the Ausoni Mountains and the Fondi plain opening up in the background.
The day of the patron saint revolves around liturgical celebrations in Piazza Duomo and, above all, the procession with the statue of Saint John the Baptist through the streets of the village. It is the unmissable event that no local would ever miss: the statue, carried on shoulders, travels through the historic center accompanied by the clergy, the confraternities, and a crowd of faithful, amidst window decorations and moments of prayer.
The religious event is complemented by secular festivities, featuring illuminations, market stalls, and the usual evening entertainment that enlivens the town squares. Participation is free and open to everyone.
The Municipality of Lenola has just over four thousand inhabitants and is located between the Fondi valley and the Ciociaria region, within the Ausoni Mountains and Lake Fondi Park, in southern Lazio. The historic center, with its stone alleys, arches, and views of the gulf, is a destination worth visiting in its own right.
Those who arrive for the patronal feast find much more than a religious celebration: the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Colle, a pilgrimage site for centuries, the hiking trails of the Ausoni Mountains, and a mountain and olive-based gastronomy that is at its best during the summer.
The feast of Saint John the Baptist, patron saint of Lenola, was celebrated on Tuesday, June 23rd, and Wednesday, June 24th, 2026. The Archdiocese of Gaeta chose the Lenola vigil for its prayer and fraternity meeting of diocesan confraternities, which gave the evening of the 23rd a much broader scope than just the local one.
The meeting was set for 6:00 PM at the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Colle, from where brothers and sisters, with banners and confraternal habits, descended in a procession to the parish church for the vigil mass of the Patron Saint. Afterward, the Congregation of Saint John the Baptist offered a fraternal agape to all participants.
On June 24th, the day of the solemnity, the town gathered for liturgical celebrations and the procession of the statue of Saint John the Baptist through the streets of the historic center, the most anticipated and attended moment of the entire festival. All events were free of charge.
Celebration times for June 24th are announced by the parish in the days leading up to the feast.
