Traditional Ferragosto in San Giovanni Incarico

In the heart of summer, when Ferragosto lights up squares across Italy, the town of San Giovanni Incarico, in the province of Frosinone, celebrates in honor of Maria SS. Assunta and San Rocco. The double recurrence on August 15th and 16th is one of the most heartfelt events of the year for the local community, blending religious devotion with popular festivities, drawing families, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns in the Liri Valley.

Religious Celebrations

The spiritual heart of the festival is the Church of San Giovanni Battista, where a three-day preparation period with the rosary and evening Holy Mass takes place in the preceding days. On August 15th, the Solemnity of the Assumption, the mass is followed by a procession with the statue of Maria SS. Assunta through the streets of the historic center; on August 16th, it is the turn of San Rocco, the pilgrim from Montpellier invoked for centuries as a protector against epidemics, whose statue also parades in procession among lines of the faithful. Both processions are accompanied by the notes of the "Vincenzo Bellini" municipal band, one of the town's historic musical institutions.

Evening Festivities in the Square

After the religious rites, the festival continues in Piazza Regina Margherita with free evening events: concerts, folk music, and live performances animate the town center until late. The 2025 edition featured the pizzica and folk music group I Saltapizzica and the band Orogenesi, in a festive atmosphere that mixes traditional Southern Italian dances with entertainment for all ages.

A Community and Its Confraternities

The festivities are promoted by the Pia Congregazione — the association linked to the cult of the Madonna della Guardia, whose sanctuary overlooks the town from Mount San Maurizio — with the patronage of the Municipality of San Giovanni Incarico and the Valle della Guardia Consortium. It is a typical festival model of the lower Lazio villages, where lay confraternities have guarded rites, statues, and processional traditions for generations.

The village stands on a hill in the middle Liri Valley, overlooking the lake of San Giovanni Incarico, a reservoir formed by the Liri River and now a valued natural oasis.
