An ancient devotion in the heart of the Piana di Fondi

August 16th is a date that Fondi never forgets. Although he is not the city's patron saint, San Rocco is held in deep and enduring affection here: the saint from Montpellier, depicted with a pilgrim's staff, a shell, and a faithful dog, has been invoked for centuries throughout Southern Italy as a protector against epidemics and bodily ailments. In this city in the province of Latina—the agricultural heart of the Piana di Fondi and a historic crossroads between southern Lazio and Campania—this devotion has taken root within the Franciscan community and continues to mark the summer calendar.

This festival is not a mere spectacle; it is a day for the community. From the early hours of the morning, the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi, overlooking Piazza IV Novembre, opens its doors for a series of Eucharistic celebrations, with priests and friars available for confessions. In the afternoon, anticipation builds toward the most awaited moment: the evening procession with the statue of the saint, which winds from the church through Piazza IV Novembre and Piazza Alcide De Gasperi before traversing the streets of the historic center.
