In the heart of the Alto Casertano, along the Volturno valley, the village of Ailano (Province of Caserta, Campania) celebrates its patron saint, Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist, every year in early May. The Patronal Feast is the most cherished event of the year for the community: for a few days, the streets and squares of the town fill with faithful, pilgrims, and visitors, in a blend of religious devotion and popular celebration that renews the town's collective identity.
Ailano is one of only about thirty Italian municipalities that venerate Saint John the Evangelist—the apostle beloved by Jesus—as their patron, rather than the more common Saint John the Baptist. The community honors the Saint twice a year: on December 27th, the liturgical feast of the Evangelist, and in early May, for the memorial of Saint John Before the Latin Gate (May 6th), which has become Ailano's major patronal festival, encompassing both religious and secular elements. This dual devotion, as rare as it is deep-rooted, was also studied in Antonio Ferraro's book San Giovanni Apostolo ed Evangelista. Unità ed identità di Ailano (2015).
The highlight of the festival is May 6th, featuring a solemn High Mass—often presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Alife-Caiazzo—followed by the solemn procession of the saint's statue through the main streets of the town, accompanied by the faithful, civil and military authorities, and the sounds of the brass band. The celebration is traditionally preceded by a tribute at the War Memorial, a sign of the union between the religious and civil dimensions that characterizes this feast. Many pilgrims arrive from neighboring towns, such as Prata Sannita and Capriati al Volturno, testifying to a bond that transcends the borders of the small municipality.
Alongside the sacred rites, the secular program offers the most spectacular moments: the star is the Gran Concerto Bandistico Città di Ailano, joined by other guest brass bands, with musical matinées and soirées in Piazza Regina Margherita. There is no shortage of fireworks displays, which punctuate the festival days and culminate in the final pyrotechnic show that lights up the village sky. Illuminations, stalls, and convivial moments complete a warm and participatory atmosphere.
More than just a date on the calendar, the Feast of Saint John represents a true symbol of unity and identity for Ailano. It is the occasion when emigrants return to the village to reunite with their families, where generations meet, and the community rediscovers its roots. In 2012, this shared devotion led to a twinning with the Sicilian municipality of San Giovanni La Punta (Catania), confirming the aggregating power of the cult of the Evangelist.
In 2026, the village of Ailano, in the Province of Caserta, once again renewed its appointment with its patronal feast in honor of Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist, celebrated in early May according to a tradition deeply rooted in the Caserta community.
As per tradition, the festivities are divided between religious rites and a secular program over several days in early May, culminating on May 6th. The typical festival calendar includes:
