Two days of devotion, processions, and music in the village of Vallo di Diano
In Monte San Giacomo, a small village in the province of Salerno overlooking the Vallo di Diano, the patronal feast is not just another summer appointment: it is the moment when the community reconnects with the saint from whom the town takes its name. Every year, on July 25th and 26th, the Municipality celebrates both Saint James the Greater and Saint Anne, the two patrons who have accompanied its religious and civic history for centuries. The village is nestled at the foot of Mount Cervati, within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, in one of the greenest areas of Campania.
On July 25th, the liturgical day of Saint James the Apostle, the community gathers for a solemn mass and a procession that winds through the alleys of the historic center. July 26th is dedicated to Saints Joachim and Anne: after the church rites, the statues of the patrons are carried through the village streets, accompanied by candle bearers and a marching band, following a custom repeated in dozens of communities across the Cilento and Vallo di Diano regions. It is the time when emigrants return to the village and families reunite: here, the patronal feast is also a grand collective homecoming.
Local tradition links the village's name — the ancient Sanctum Jacobum di Diano — to the devotion to the Apostle of Spain, brought, according to popular legend, by pilgrims from the Gargano region, a stop along the pilgrimage route from Jerusalem to Santiago de Compostela. The historically certain fact, however, is the strong medieval bond with nearby Dianum, modern-day Teggiano, of which Monte San Giacomo was a part along with other hamlets. The Church of Saint James the Apostle and Saint Philip, which houses frescoes and works of art, remains the heart of the celebrations.
To the north of the town, on a hill overlooking the valley, stands the Sanctuary of Saint Anne, a building with sober lines that underwent extensive renovation between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is one of the places most cherished by the locals and one of the best-known Marian-Annian sanctuaries in the inland Salerno area: here, in the days leading up to the feast, meetings, prayer sessions, and cultural events are concentrated. In 2026, on the eve of the festivities, the sanctuary hosted the conference «The faith that crossed the Atlantic from Monte San Giacomo to Hoboken», dedicated to the bond between the village and its emigrant community in the United States.
Surrounding the two days of rites, the municipal administration builds a civic program each year that extends the festivities throughout the last week of July: square performances, children's theater at the Villa Comunale, sports tournaments, meetings with the Council of Sangiacomesi in the World, and a grand closing concert. In 2026, the most anticipated moment was the free live show by Lorenzo Fragola in Piazza Sandro Pertini, held immediately after the patronal solemnities: a way to combine devotion, culture, and entertainment while filling the village with visitors.
Those who arrive for the feast will find a historic center with a medieval layout, featuring 19th-century palaces with stone portals and a richly decorated bell tower, as well as a territory that serves as the gateway for excursions to Mount Cervati, the highest peak in Campania. Local cuisine — legumes, mountain cheeses, homemade pasta — completes an experience that blends popular faith, nature, and rural tradition in one of the least touristy and most authentic areas of the region.
In 2026, the patronal feast of Monte San Giacomo opened on Saturday, July 25th, dedicated to Saint James the Apostle, and continued on Sunday, July 26th with rites and the procession in honor of Saints Joachim and Anne. On the eve, July 23rd, the Sanctuary of Saint Anne had already hosted the conference «The faith that crossed the Atlantic from Monte San Giacomo to Hoboken», a research project by Nicola Nitido with the participation of the Iubilate Polyphonic Choir.
The most anticipated moment of the civic program arrived on Monday, July 27th, with the free concert by Lorenzo Fragola in Piazza Sandro Pertini: the singer-songwriter from Catania, winner of X Factor and multiple-time competitor at the Sanremo Festival, closed the patronal festivities in front of residents and visitors.
In the following days, the municipal program continued with the 5-a-side football tournament «See you in Monte San Giacomo. In memory of Antonello» (July 27th, 28th, and 30th), the 5th Council of Sangiacomesi in the World at Palazzo Marone on July 29th followed by the concert «Neapolitan Enchantment» by Luciano Capurro, and the food and wine event «Monte San Giacomo and its nations» on July 31st and August 1st in the historic center.
By car: A2 Mediterranean Motorway, take the Sala Consilina exit, then follow provincial roads towards Monte San Giacomo (about 15 minutes). By train: Sala Consilina station, with bus connections to the village.
Religious celebrations are held at the Church of Saint James the Apostle and Saint Philip and at the Sanctuary of Saint Anne; processions pass through the historic center. Performances take place in Piazza Sandro Pertini, Piazza Radio Libere, and at the Villa Comunale «Enrico Quaranta».
Free admission to all celebrations and square performances.
The village is located at a hilly altitude: even in late July, evenings can be cool, so it is best to bring a light jacket. Parking is recommended at the entrance to the town, as the alleys of the historic center are closed to traffic during the processions.
