The patron saint of Paolisi celebrated on November 30th with a triduum, procession, and markets

Saint Andrew the Apostle is the patron saint of Paolisi, a town of just over two thousand inhabitants nestled in the Valle Caudina, in the province of Benevento, in Campania. The feast falls on November 30th, a fixed date in the liturgical calendar, and for generations, it has marked the most heartfelt moment of the year for the local community. Andrew, brother of Saint Peter and a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee, is remembered as the "first-called" among the apostles and, according to tradition, suffered martyrdom in Patras on an X-shaped cross. As the protector of singers, sailors, and fishermen, he is the object of a domestic and discreet devotion in Paolisi, passed down from family to family rather than through books.
In the days leading up to the solemnity, the Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle, overlooking Piazza Vittorio Veneto, hosts the triduum: three afternoons of prayer that prepare the community for the encounter with their patron. In the 2024 edition, for example, the triduum took place from Wednesday the 27th to Friday the 29th of November at 5:00 PM in the parish church. This is the most intimate part of the feast, the one that doesn't make it onto posters but truly matters to the locals: families gather in the pews, often at the end of their workday, and the church becomes the geographical and emotional heart of the village.
November 30th is the day of the patron saint. The procession winds through the streets of the town in the late afternoon—in 2024 it started at 5:00 PM—accompanied by the faithful, confraternities, and the sound of bells, before returning to the church for the Solemn Holy Mass (at 6:00 PM in 2024). First-time visitors will immediately notice the intimate scale of the event: there is no grand spectacle here like in the major patronal feasts of the South, but rather an entire town walking behind the statue of its saint, with lights glowing on the narrow streets and windows illuminated.
Alongside the religious program, the Patronal Feast has developed a secular side in recent years, curated by the Paolisi Youth Forum in collaboration with local associations and under the patronage of the Municipality of Paolisi. The formula used in 2024 highlights the approach: Christmas markets and food stalls spread over two days, live music, surprises for children, and an Arts and Literature Festival set up in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. It is an intelligent way to align the patronal feast with the start of the Christmas season, as November 30th generally marks the beginning of Advent.
The food stalls are an opportunity to rediscover the traditional peasant cuisine of the Caudina area, consisting of simple dishes and local products: extra virgin olive oil, chestnuts, mountain cured meats and cheeses, and handmade pasta. We are, after all, in the Sannio region, one of the most interesting wine-growing areas in Campania: Aglianico del Taburno and Falanghina del Sannio are the wines that best tell the story of these hills, and in late November—a season of lit fireplaces and early mists in the valley—they find their natural context.
Paolisi is located at the western end of the province of Benevento, along the historic SS7 Appia road, in the Valle Caudina, which has always served as a corridor between the Campanian plains and the inland Sannio. It is a small town, squeezed between the Partenio and Taburno mountains, where community life still revolves around the square and the parish. Visiting Paolisi on November 30th means seeing this mechanism in action: a festival that was not built for tourists and therefore retains an authenticity difficult to find in the region's more publicized events.
The Patronal Feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle is a short, free, and deeply local event. Those looking for big names and massive stages should look elsewhere; however, those who want to understand how a patronal feast is truly experienced in the Sannio—amidst devotion, home-cooked food, and the first scent of Christmas—will find exactly what they are looking for in Paolisi. We recommend arriving in the afternoon, following the procession, and ending the evening among the stalls in the square.
The Patronal Feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle in Paolisi (province of Benevento, Campania) is tied to a fixed date in the liturgical calendar, November 30th, which falls on a Monday in 2026. For this reason, the event is effectively announced every year, even when the detailed program has not yet been made public.
At the moment, neither the triduum calendar nor the times for the procession and Solemn Mass for 2026 have been published. It is also not yet confirmed whether the secular side of the feast—Christmas markets, food stalls, live music, and cultural initiatives by the Youth Forum—which has accompanied religious celebrations in recent years, will return.
Those wishing to participate can follow the events page of the Municipality of Paolisi website or contact the Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle directly in Piazza Vittorio Veneto: that is where the program is distributed, usually in the weeks immediately preceding the feast. We will update this page as soon as official information becomes available.
By car: Paolisi can be reached via the SS7 Appia, the historic road that crosses the Valle Caudina connecting Benevento to Naples. By train: the EAV Benevento–Naples via Valle Caudina line serves the towns in the valley. By bus: routes along the SS7 Appia include the Rotondi/Paolisi stop, at the intersection of Via Caudina and Via San Lorenzo.
Religious celebrations are held at the Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle, on Piazza Vittorio Veneto (82011 Paolisi, BN); the procession travels through the town center, and stalls are set up in the square.
Admission is free to all religious and secular events. Only food and drinks at the stalls are paid.
Late November in the Valle Caudina can be cold and damp: warm clothing is essential, especially for the evening procession. The center of Paolisi is compact and walkable; it is best to leave your car in the parking areas on the outskirts of the town. For accommodation, you can rely on facilities in the Valle Caudina or in Benevento, about thirty kilometers away.
