Three days of devotion, brass bands, and fireworks in the Cilento village of Pisciotta
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the municipality of Pisciotta, a village overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in the Province of Salerno, in the heart of the Cilento National Park, the most anticipated event of the year is the feast in honor of Saint Agnello Abate, the community's patron saint. The summer festivities traditionally take place on August 9th, 10th, and 11th, transforming the historic center into one large celebration space, featuring religious services, brass band concerts, live music, and pyrotechnic displays.
The cult of Saint Agnello in Pisciotta has been documented since the 15th century, when the priest Tommaso Basilio established his veneration in the hamlet of Rodio. The saint, protector of expectant mothers and co-patron of Naples, is commemorated here three times a year:
The parish church of Rodio, which houses 19th-century local paintings and a Baroque bell tower with a bulbous spire, was granted the title of Diocesan Sanctuary in 2009.
The most anticipated moment is the procession that begins around noon on August 10th from the village square, winding through the streets and alleys of the historic center. Leading the pageant are the statues of the siblings Saint Lucia and Saint Aniello, carried on the shoulders of the faithful and accompanied by the members of the Confraternity dedicated to the saint, the clergy, and the brass band. The morning is marked by masses in the Mother Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, in Piazza Marco Pagano, and the traditional blessing; in the evening, a mass is celebrated with the veneration of the relics.
The secular program takes place primarily in Piazza Raffaele Pinto, the true heart of the festival. The evenings of August 9th and 10th are dedicated to lyrical-symphonic music performed by some of the most prestigious brass bands in Southern Italy: over the years, ensembles such as the "Cittร di Gioia del Colle" Grand Concert Band, the Rutigliano City Band, and the Pisciotta City Band have performed, joined by local choirs like the "Jubilate Deo" of Abatemarco. August 11th is reserved for a live pop music concert: in recent years, artists such as Tullio De Piscopo, Enzo Avitabile and the bottari, and Fausto Leali have graced the Pisciotta stage. The evenings conclude with fireworks, which are particularly scenic thanks to the village's position, suspended between olive groves and the sea.
As is the case in many Cilento towns, the patronal feast coincides with the return of emigrants: those born in Pisciotta aim to be in the village on August 10th. For this reason, the festival is not just a religious appointment, but also the moment when the community reunites, houses fill up, and the squares remain lively until late at night. Visitors from outside will find an authentic atmosphere, far removed from events manufactured for tourism.
The village, with its medieval layout of stairs, arches, and alleys, dominates the Cilento coast from above and is surrounded by one of the most characteristic olive groves in Campania, that of the pisciottana olive. Further down, in Marina di Pisciotta, the fishing of anchovies with the "menaica" net survives, a tradition protected and celebrated by another beloved festival on the local calendar. A stay during the patronal feast therefore allows one to combine popular devotion, Cilento gastronomy, and the sea of the National Park.
The detailed program, including times, guest bands, and the name of the final evening's artist, is released every year close to the festival by the Municipality of Pisciotta and the parish, through posters displayed in the village and local social media channels. Times and appointments may be subject to change: it is advisable to check official information a few days before departure.
At the time of verification, neither the calendar nor the official program for the patronal feast of Saint Agnello Abate in Pisciotta for 2026 has been published. The sources consulted only confirm the historical custom, which places the festivities in the days around August 10th, the day of the patron saint's votive feast.
The traditional structure of the festival includes religious celebrations in the Mother Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, the procession through the streets of the historic center with the statues carried on shoulders, evenings of lyrical-symphonic music performed by guest bands in Piazza Raffaele Pinto, and the conclusion with fireworks. The names of the artists and band ensembles are only made known a few weeks in advance.
To find out the final dates and times, it is advisable to check the official channels of the Municipality of Pisciotta and the parish, as well as the posters displayed in the village.
By car: from the SS18 Tirrenia Inferiore, you can reach Pisciotta via the provincial roads that climb up to the village; from the north, the reference exit is Vallo della Lucania/Ascea, from the south, the Palinuro-Caprioli exit.
By train: Pisciotta-Palinuro station on the Naples-Reggio Calabria Tyrrhenian line, connected to the historic center by local buses and taxis.
By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about a three-hour drive away.
The historic center is pedestrianized and largely consists of stairs and alleys: you can park in the roadside areas along the access to the village. On concert evenings, temporary traffic closures are possible on sections near the square: it is better to arrive well in advance.
All religious and secular events are traditionally free and open to the entire community and visitors.
Pisciotta and Marina di Pisciotta offer B&Bs, farmhouses, and small hotels; during the mid-August period, availability is very limited, so it is advisable to book well in advance. Must-try: menaica anchovies, pisciottana olive oil, and Cilento cuisine dishes.
