Four days of faith, music, and fireworks over the sea in Marina di Camerota
In Marina di Camerota, a coastal village in the Municipality of Camerota in the heart of the Cilento region, the patronal festival of Saint Dominic of Guzmán is the most anticipated event of the year. While the patron saint's day is August 4th, the celebrations span four full days, transforming the town into an open-air stage: alleys adorned with artistic lights, market stalls lining the streets, and squares packed until late at night. It is a festival that blends two souls: the deep devotion of the seafaring people and the vibrant energy of a community that swells in population during August.
Preparations begin well before the main event: the solemn novena guides the faithful with evening services, usually at 7:00 PM, in the days leading up to August 4th. The patron saint's day begins early with morning masses, followed by the most significant moments of the day:
This is where one realizes that the festival is more than just a calendar of events: for Marina di Camerota, Saint Dominic is the protector of those who go to sea, and the procession remains a moment of collective thanksgiving.
Running alongside the liturgical program is the civil program, which is traditionally free and of high quality. The main stage is set up in the central Piazza San Domenico, while a second evening event takes place in the picturesque Tourist Port, with the sea as a backdrop. Over the years, the festival has hosted major names in Neapolitan and singer-songwriter music—from Peppe Servillo with the Solis String Quartet to James Senese—alongside theatrical performances, book presentations, and folk music evenings.
The grand finale on August 4th is traditionally entrusted to the brass band concert on the Lungomare Trieste: major Italian marching bands perform symphonic and operatic arrangements outdoors, a Southern musical tradition that is worth the evening alone.
The climax arrives at midnight on August 4th, when the fireworks display is launched from the sea in front of the port. Thousands of people gather on the promenade, the beaches, and on boats: the glowing trails reflect on the water, and the Cilento cliffs serve as a natural amphitheater. It is the iconic image of this festival and the reason many visitors plan their stay specifically for these dates.
Marina di Camerota celebrates its patron saint a second time on March 8th, known as the Votive Saint Dominic. It is a more intimate festival, held outside the tourist season, where the fishing community renews its vow: a thanksgiving for dangers escaped and graces received. The tradition stems from an episode involving four fishermen caught in a storm who invoked the saint and returned safely to shore. Celebrations center around the Church of Sant'Alfonso, with liturgy and a procession through the town, culminating in the late afternoon—around 7:00 PM—with a fireworks display over the water in front of the port, organized according to safety protocols set by the Coast Guard.
As with every great patronal festival in Campania, the atmosphere is just as important as the program. Artistic illuminations create glowing arches over the main streets, while local markets fill the center with stalls. All around, you can enjoy Cilento cuisine: *menaica* anchovies, white figs, extra virgin olive oil, and the catch of the day at the port restaurants.
The setting makes all the difference. Marina di Camerota is one of the most beautiful stretches of coast in Campania, located within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park: hidden coves accessible only by sea, sea caves, a lively port, and a historic center that fills up every summer evening. Those who arrive for the Saint Dominic festival find both an authentic tradition, not staged for tourists, and one of the most beloved seaside destinations in Southern Italy.
The 2026 calendar confirms the classic formula: four days, from August 1st to 4th, with free admission to all civil program events. The solemn novena began on July 25th, with evening celebrations until August 3rd.
The musical lineup opens on August 1st with Core 'e Napule, a journey through Neapolitan music, song, and dance in Piazza San Domenico. On Sunday, August 2nd, the same square hosts a book presentation and a concert by Nicola Napolitano with the In-Cantus trio, featuring Neapolitan classics and lyrical-pop reinterpretations: organizers advise arriving early due to the expected large turnout. On Monday, August 3rd, the stage moves to the Tourist Port with the pop-urban duo I Desideri and their «Assieme Tour 2026».
Tuesday, August 4th, the patron saint's day, is marked by morning masses and the procession with civil authorities and fishermen; in the evening, the procession winds through the village streets and concludes with a blessing from Bishop Antonio De Luca. At 9:30 PM, the brass band concert enlivens the Lungomare Trieste and, at midnight, the fireworks display over the sea by Carmine Senatore brings the most important festival of the Municipality of Camerota to a beautiful close.
