The patron saint of the Sorrento Peninsula celebrated with faith, Christmas markets, and festive cheer

December 14th is the most anticipated date of the year in Sant'Agnello, a town of just over eight thousand residents nestled between Piano di Sorrento and Sorrento, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania. On this day, the entire community celebrates Saint Agnello Abate, the Neapolitan monk who died on December 14, 596. He gave his name to the town and, alongside Saint Prisco of Nocera, serves as its patron saint.
This is more than just a liturgical appointment; it is a moment when the town's districts, the hamlets of Colli di Fontanelle and Trasaella, and families living far away reunite around a shared identity. The festival is free and open to everyone, drawing worshippers, curious onlookers, and visitors from neighboring coastal towns every year.
Devotion to Saint Agnelloโknown as Aniello in the local Neapolitan dialectโhas roots in the early Middle Ages. Tradition remembers him as the protector of farmers, travelers, and the sick. His cult remains vibrant throughout the Sorrento Peninsula and in Naples, where he is venerated as one of the city's patron saints. In Sant'Agnello, the heart of this devotion is the Parish Church of Saints Prisco and Agnello, which houses the patron's statue and remains open from dawn until late at night during the festivities.
The calendar of celebrations follows a well-established pattern, organized by the parish over the first two weeks of December:
The so-called Patronage Feast, celebrated close to December 14th, concludes the cycle with the statue being carried out and the procession passing through the main streets, amidst decorated balconies and illuminated roads.
For several years, the patronal feast has coincided with the municipal Christmas program, ViviAmo il Natale, which spans the entire period from the lighting of the tree in Piazza Matteotti until Epiphany. During the patronal days, the town offers a rich civil program: Christmas markets in Piazzetta Angri, featuring tastings of local products and evening shows; Santa's House and entertainment for children; the animated nativity scene set up in the rooms of the Workers' Mutual Aid Society; and the Animal Exhibition Fair on Viale dei Pini, a highly popular event for families held in conjunction with the saint's celebrations.
During these days, local food stalls and pastry shops offer traditional Campanian Christmas sweets and dishes from Sorrentine cuisine, alongside the products that have made this stretch of coast famous: citrus fruits, primarily lemons, and extra virgin olive oil from the hills sloping down to the sea. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the town outside the tourist season, when Sant'Agnello returns to being a community of residents.
Those arriving on the Sorrento Peninsula in December find a different side of this territory: no summer crowds or queues, just a town gathered around its own traditions, with a view of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius as a natural backdrop. The Patronal Feast of Saint Agnello Abate is one of the most authentic events in the Campanian winter calendar, where religious ritual and popular celebration remain firmly intertwined.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Agnello Abate has not yet been officially announced. The feast of the patron saint of Sant'Agnello, in the province of Naples, traditionally falls on December 14th, but dates, times, and the program of side events must be confirmed by the Parish of Saints Prisco and Agnello and the municipal administration.
In previous years, the festivities have combined an intense liturgical calendar โ enthronement of the statue, novena, masses from dawn to dusk, and a solemn procession โ with the municipal Christmas program, featuring markets, nativity scenes, children's entertainment, and events throughout the town center. Those planning to attend are invited to check information on the official channels of the Municipality of Sant'Agnello and the parish before traveling.
Celebrations are concentrated in the Parish Church of Saints Prisco and Agnello and the streets of the center of Sant'Agnello (NA), with side events in Piazza Matteotti, Piazzetta Angri, and Viale dei Pini.
Participation in celebrations, the procession, and markets is free. Only food and purchases at the stalls are paid.
The early morning masses on December 14th are the most attended: arrive well in advance. Winter clothing is recommended, as the procession takes place outdoors. For updated schedules, it is advisable to check with the Parish of Saints Prisco and Agnello and the website of the Municipality of Sant'Agnello.
