The patronal feast of Trappeto honoring Maria SS. Annunziata, blending faith and tradition
March 25th, the day of the Annunciation, is the most important date on the religious and civic calendar of Trappeto, a small coastal town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily. On this day, the entire community gathers around its patron saint, Maria SS. Annunziata, in a celebration that has united faith, tradition, and collective identity for generations. The event is organized jointly by the Municipality of Trappeto and the Maria SS. Annunziata Parish, with the active involvement of the faithful, volunteers, and local groups.
The festivities do not end in a single day: the path of preparation begins as early as the start of March and is linked to the celebrations dedicated to Saint Joseph. The Novena of Saint Joseph opens the period with the inauguration and blessing of the votive altars, set up in various parts of the town by families and volunteer groups. This is followed by solemn vespers, the blessing of the bread, and on March 19th, solemn masses and the procession in honor of the saint, as well as the traditional "virgineddi" representation.
The spiritual heart of the feast, however, is the Triduum of the Annunziata in the days leading up to March 25th, accompanied by spiritual exercises preached in the parish church. It is the moment when the town's devotion reaches its peak in preparation for the patronal solemnity.
On March 25th, the day begins with Holy Mass and the renewal of the vow, followed in the afternoon by the celebration in the small church and the solemn procession of the statue of the Madonna through the village streets, accompanied by a marching band. The day is marked above all by the tamburinari (traditional drummers), who traverse the town streets with their unmistakable rhythm, keeping a tradition deeply rooted in Sicilian popular culture alive.
Like many patronal feasts in small Sicilian towns, the Trappeto celebration is both a moment of religious reflection and a great community party. Over the years, the day has been enriched with civic events such as concerts in the square and fireworks displays, which have transformed the evening of the feast into an event awaited by everyone, from the elderly to children.
Visiting Trappeto during the Annunziata feast means discovering the authentic soul of a Sicilian seaside village, where popular devotion and handed-down traditions intertwine in a day capable of uniting the entire community.
The 2026 festivities took place from March 8th to 25th. From March 8th to 19th, the Novena of Saint Joseph opened the period with the inauguration and blessing of the votive altars, set up in various parts of the town by volunteers from the Annunziata and local families and groups. On March 18th, the blessing of the bread and solemn vespers were held; on March 19th, the solemnity of Saint Joseph, morning and afternoon masses and the procession took place, in addition to the "virgineddi" representation.
From March 21st to 23rd, the Triduum of the Annunziata, with spiritual exercises preached by Father Filippo Pisciotta of the Passionist Fathers, prepared the community for the patronal solemnity. On March 25th, the day opened with Holy Mass and the renewal of the vow at 10:00 AM, concluding in the afternoon with mass in the small church and the solemn procession through the town streets, accompanied by performances from the tamburinari.
Trappeto is located on the Tyrrhenian coast of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, between Balestrate and Terrasini. By car, it can be reached via the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway (Trappeto/Balestrate exit). By train, the reference station is on the Palermo-Trapani line. The nearest airport is Palermo-Punta Raisi (Falcone-Borsellino), about 25 km away.
Religious celebrations and the procession take place at the Maria SS. Annunziata Church and along the streets of the town center. Access to the events is free. For the detailed program, it is recommended to consult the Municipality of Trappeto and the Maria SS. Annunziata Parish.
