The patronal feast of Triggiano: a blend of faith, historical pageantry, and tradition

The Patronal Feast of Maria Santissima della Croce is the most cherished event of the year for Triggiano, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Apulia. Every year in September, the entire community gathers around its patron saint for a festival that combines spiritual depth with popular celebration, featuring a rich program of religious and secular events. As noted by the organizing committee, the city «dresses itself in light, prayer, and celebration».
The origins of this devotion are rooted in a fascinating 16th-century legend. It is said that a traveler from Lecce, who was ill and heading to Naples for medical advice, was caught in a violent storm near Triggiano. Having lost his way, he was guided by the light of an ancient votive shrine located at a crossroads outside the town walls. He spent the night in prayer under the image of the Virgin and, upon waking, found himself miraculously healed. The Church of Santa Maria della Croce was built on the site of that shrine and completed in 1608; it still houses the fresco of the Madonna and Child today. On September 8, 1732, Maria Santissima della Croce was officially proclaimed the patron saint of Triggiano.
The festivities open on September 8th, the day of the liturgical feast, with a procession and a solemn Eucharistic concelebration at the Mother Church. During the novena, the faithful gather in prayer to invoke the protection of the Virgin. The highlight occurs on the third Sunday of September, with a solemn mass and the procession of the sacred image through the city streets, followed by a large and devout crowd.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a packed calendar of popular events. One of the most anticipated moments is the historical pageant, which transports the town center back in time: ladies, knights, commoners, and artisans in period costumes parade amidst music, dance, and color, enlivening the streets until the popular celebration in the square. The program also features band concerts, traditional illuminations that light up the streets, food and wine stalls showcasing local products, and firework displays that provide a spectacular finale to the evenings.
More than just a local festival, this recurrence represents an opportunity for the Triggiano community to reflect on the past year and look toward the future. The devotion to Maria Santissima della Croce, coordinated by the «Maria SS.ma della Croce» Patronal Feast Committee with the support of the Municipality of Triggiano and local associations, keeps alive a tradition passed down for centuries, renewing the deep bond between the city and its patron saint every September.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Maria Santissima della Croce in Triggiano (Metropolitan City of Bari) is expected in September, following the tradition that links the event to the liturgical feast of September 8th and the culmination on the third Sunday of the month. At the moment, the «Maria SS.ma della Croce» Patronal Feast Committee has not yet released the official dates or the detailed program of the festivities. To find out the calendar of celebrations, historical pageants, concerts, and shows, it is advisable to consult the official channels of the organizing committee.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Triggiano (BA), between the Mother Church, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Croce, and the main town squares, including Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
