The summer patronal feast of Ordona, in the Tavoliere delle Puglie
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Patronal Feast in honor of Saint Leo the Bishop is the heart of summer in Ordona, an agricultural village in the Tavoliere area of the province of Foggia, in northern Apulia. For a few days in August, the town transforms: religious celebrations in honor of the patron saint intertwine with a rich secular program of music, comedy, food festivals, and shows, drawing both residents and many former Ordona locals back to town for the occasion.
Saint Leo the Bishop is venerated as the first Catholic bishop of the ancient diocese of Herdonia, the Roman city from which modern-day Ordona descends. The patron saint is celebrated twice a year: on January 22nd, the liturgical date, with religious rites and a procession, and in August, with the solemn patronal feast that combines devotion with public festivities. It is this second, warmer, and more popular occasion that defines the town's major celebration.
The core of the event remains faith: the Eucharistic celebrations in the Church of Saint Leo the Bishop and the solemn procession that carries the statue of the patron saint through the streets of Ordona, accompanied by the faithful, the brass band, and the festive lights illuminating the historic center.
Surrounding the sacred rites is a program of performances, with Piazza Aldo Moro serving as the main stage. Recent editions have featured well-known names from Apulian and national comedy and entertainment—from the comedy duo Toti e Tata (Emilio Solfrizzi and Antonio Stornaiolo) to Pino Campagna—as well as dance music nights, rock tributes, pizzica, and magic shows. The festival traditionally concludes with a fireworks display, the most anticipated moment for families.
The culinary aspect is not to be missed, with food festivals dedicated to local dishes: from porchetta to cing'l e ruc'l (fresh pasta with wild arugula from the Tavoliere), accompanied by local wine and beer, served along the streets and squares of the town in a convivial atmosphere.
The patronal feast of Ordona remains a fixed appointment in the municipal summer calendar. Dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced; they will be published in the weeks leading up to the event on the Ordona Municipality website and the Saint Leo the Bishop Parish channels. Admission to all events is, as tradition dictates, free.
