The summer event calendar of Paternopoli, in the heart of Irpinia

Paternopoli Summer is the series of summer events that the Paternopoli municipal administration offers every year to residents and visitors alike. It is not a single event with a fixed date, but a widespread calendar: musical evenings, cultural meetings, convivial moments, sports initiatives, and food and wine appointments spread throughout the hottest weeks of the year, across the squares of the historic center, the village's open-air spaces, and the green areas along the Calore river. It is the classic formula for summers in Irpinian villages, where the calendar is born from the dialogue between the Municipality, associations, the parish, and volunteers.
Paternopoli is located in the province of Avellino, in Campania, at an altitude of about 480 meters, on the hills that overlook the Calore valley. Just over two thousand inhabitants, the paternesi, guard a village whose history dates back to ancient Samnium and then traverses the Roman, Lombard, and Norman eras. The center still bears the marks of the long reconstruction following the 1980 Irpinia earthquake, but has not lost its layout as a compact village. The patron saint is Saint Nicholas, celebrated on December 6, while the Church of Saint Nicholas, also known as the Sanctuary of the Consolation, preserves a 16th-century icon of the Madonna della Consolazione that has been at the center of local devotion for centuries. Also worth seeing are the circular medieval tower, which houses the Museum of Peasant Civilization, and the De Iorio-De Conciliis palace with its ancient granaries.
The character of Paternopoli Summer is intentionally popular and cross-cutting: the stated goal is to combine leisure, culture, and tradition without separating fun from the memory of the village. In its various seasons, the municipal program has hosted and featured events such as:
No Irpinian summer is complete without the table, and Paternopoli has a respectable menu of flavors. The Aglianico grape is grown here, giving life to the great reds of the Taurasi area, and the wine season is so central to the identity that it has a dedicated festival, La Macenata, which at the end of summer re-enacts the ancient ritual of grape treading with feet. Local delicacies also include broccolo aprilatico, San Mango figs, and soffritto, a robust soup from peasant cuisine. In the summer calendar, these products return regularly in the form of tastings, social dinners, and food stands.
Paternopoli Summer is part of a calendar that knows no dead seasons. In winter, the Paternopoli Carnival brings allegorical floats made by local artisans with papier-mรขchรฉ, clay, and iron to the streets, along with masked and dance groups. In August, the Vegetable Festival (Sagra dell'Orto) tells the story of rural culture through the vegetables and dishes of the past. At the end of September comes La Macenata, with local cellars and the tarantella accompanying the grape pressing. In autumn and spring, religious festivals follow one another, from the feast of Maria SS. della Consolazione to those of Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Michael the Archangel.
Those looking for a major festival with international names will not find their destination here. Paternopoli Summer is something else: it is the slow rhythm of a village that reclaims its squares when evening falls, with good wine, music coming from the loudspeaker at the end of the street, and a community that comes together. For those visiting Irpinia in July and August, it is the perfect opportunity to combine the discovery of Taurasi wineries with an authentic evening, free of tourist filters. It is advisable to check the updated program on the Municipality's channels and the local portal before setting off, as the calendar is compiled and announced year by year.
The 2026 summer season in Paternopoli was officially opened by the municipal administration, which has once again adopted the Paternopoli Summer formula, the widespread calendar of events that accompanies the village during the hottest months. The announcement appeared on the local portal on July 8, 2026.
At the time of writing this entry, the detailed program is not yet available: the dates of individual events and the names of guests have not been published online. Those who wish to follow the festival can refer to the official channels of the Municipality of Paternopoli and the Paternopoli OnLine portal, where posters are usually released close to the events.
The village's summer season had already opened on June 28, 2026, with Estate al Fiume, the convivial day at Lido Scioscia on the Calore river promoted by the municipal administration to welcome summer together with the community.
Paternopoli is easily reached by car: from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Grottaminarda exit and continue on the provincial roads towards the Calore valley; alternatively, you can arrive from Avellino along the state road 7 Appia passing through the Taurasi area. The village is about 40 km from Avellino and a little over an hour and a half from Naples. Bus connections are guaranteed by provincial extra-urban lines, with reduced service on holidays: for evening events, the car remains the most practical solution.
The events in the municipal calendar are generally designed as initiatives open to the public; for gastronomic evenings organized by associations and committees, it is customary to pay directly for dishes at the stands. Precise conditions are communicated event by event.
In Paternopoli and neighboring municipalities (Castelfranci, Montemarano, Taurasi, Fontanarosa) there are farmhouses, bed and breakfasts, and wineries with accommodation. In high season, and especially on festival weekends, it is advisable to book a few weeks in advance.
