About Pastena in Sagra

In the hillside hamlet of Pastena, 350 meters above sea level, Pastena in Sagra brings the small square in front of the 15th-century Chapel of San Sebastiano to life for two evenings in July. It is an authentic village festival featuring traditional home-style cooking, shared tables, and friendly neighborhood chatsโ€”all just a few kilometers from the center of Massa Lubrense, in the province of Naples.

A village festival in the hills of Massa Lubrense

Pastena in Sagra is one of the most intimate summer festivals in Massa Lubrense, in the province of Naples, Campania. It takes place in the hamlet of Pastena, in the Canale area, in the space opening up before the small Chapel of San Sebastiano: two July evenings where the village fills with tables, lights, and the aromas of home cooking.

This is not a massive event, nor does it aim to be. The draw here is the traditional cuisine of yesteryear and the simplicity of an authentic place, far from the traffic of the coast: visitors will find mostly locals, families, and a few curious travelers, in a neighborhood-party atmosphere rather than a tourist event.

The Chapel of San Sebastiano, the heart of the festival

The festival takes its name and character from the place that hosts it. The Chapel of San Sebastiano stands along Via Canale, the ancient path connecting Pastena to Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi, next to the historic public washhouses. The building has existed since at least the 15th century: local tradition says it was erected during a plague epidemic, as Saint Sebastian is considered the protector of the plague-stricken.

After the terrible plague of 1656, the chapel was restored and expanded thanks to offerings collected among the inhabitants by Bartolomeo Cuccaro; a stone inscription, found during 19th-century works promoted by the parish priest Castellano, still commemorates that vow of gratitude. Inside, an ancient fresco of the Virgin and Saints Bartholomew, Januarius, Sebastian, and Sossius is preserved, today partially worn by time but still evocative.

What to expect

The format is the classic Lubrense festival style: food stalls managed by local volunteers, outdoor tables, music, and conversation until late at night. The menu changes from year to year based on the organizing committee's choices, but the common thread remains the peasant cuisine of the Sorrento Peninsula, featuring family recipes handed down through generations.

  • Stalls with traditional dishes prepared by the Pastena community
  • Outdoor tables in front of the chapel, nestled in the green hills
  • Family-friendly atmosphere, suitable for those traveling with children
  • An opportunity to discover a hamlet off the beaten tourist path of the coast

Pastena, a village 350 meters above the sea

Pastena stretches along the southern slope of the Deserto hill, at an altitude of about 350 meters, 3.4 km from the center of Massa and 1.4 km from Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi. Until 1613, it belonged to the parish of Sant'Agata; later, the parish of Santi Pietro e Paolo was established there, a single-nave church consecrated in 1847 by Archbishop Saverio Apuzzo and enriched with 18th-century furnishings and altars.

Paths run around the village, descending toward the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno: the festival is therefore also a great excuse to explore the terraces, dry-stone walls, lemon groves, and olive groves that define the agricultural landscape of Massa Lubrense on foot.

When it takes place

Pastena in Sagra is usually held in the first half of July: in 2025, the evenings were July 7th and 8th. Dates are announced each year along with the summer festival calendar of the Municipality of Massa Lubrense, distributed by local Pro Loco associations; for the 2026 edition, it is advisable to check updated information before traveling.

Other summer festivals in Massa Lubrense

Pastena in Sagra is part of a busy calendar that, between late June and mid-August, touches almost every hamlet in the Municipality of Massa Lubrense:

  • Tomato Festival (Sagra del Pomodoro) in Torca
  • Ancient Residence Festival (Festa dell'Antica Dimora) in Schiazzano
