The sacred Palm Sunday re-enactment in the historic center of Alcamo
The Passion of Christ Re-enactment is one of the most deeply felt events of Holy Week in the town of Alcamo, in the province of Trapani, Sicily. Every year, on Palm Sunday, the streets and squares of the historic center come alive with a grand sacred performance involving around 250 participants, including actors, a choir, and a dance troupe. It is a deeply popular event that defines the local identity, uniting parishes, associations, and citizens in a single collective narrative of faith.
The performance unfolds as an itinerant procession starting from the Basilica Santa Maria Assunta (the Mother Church) and crossing the ancient heart of the city. The pageant touches upon Piazzetta IV Novembre, Via Fazio, Via Commendatore Navarra, the Castello dei Conti di Modica โ the setting for the trials and the scourging โ before continuing along Via Barone San Giuseppe, Corso VI Aprile, Via Amendola, Via Arco Itria, and Via Dante. The various scenes are performed at specific points along the route, turning monuments, open spaces, and urban backdrops into stations of a grand open-air Via Crucis.
Along the route, the central moments of the Gospel narrative follow one another: the Last Supper, the arrest, the trials before Caiaphas, Pilate, and Herod, the scourging, the ascent to Calvary, the crucifixion, and finally the resurrection. The attention to period costumes, the participation of choirs โ including the Mater Dei and Joyful choirs โ and the presence of a dance troupe give the performance a powerful emotional and scenic impact.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco Cittร di Alcamo APS in collaboration with the Municipality of Alcamo, the Sicilian Region, and the Basilica Santa Maria Assunta, with the involvement of local parishes. Since 2018, the Pro Loco has been a member of Europassione per l'Italia and Europassion for Europe, networks that bring together communities that stage the Passion and support the candidacy of Holy Week Rites as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Each edition attracts thousands of spectators who fill the squares and streets of the historic center in an atmosphere of profound participation and emotion. The Passion of Christ in Alcamo is not just a religious event, but a living testament to the culture, devotion, and identity of this town in western Sicily, nestled at the foot of Mount Bonifato.
The performance was held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, starting at 4:30 PM from the Basilica Santa Maria Assunta. The main novelty of this edition was the conclusion in Piazza Ciullo, with the crucifixion and resurrection, instead of Piazza Bagolino as in previous years.
In the role of Jesus was 28-year-old Marco Posateri from Balestrate; the cast also included Giuseppe Cusimano (Caiaphas), Pierpaolo Caldararo (Pilate), Gaspare Calvaruso (Herod), Isabella Viola (Madonna), and Emilia Di Maggio (Magdalene). The Municipality of Alcamo supported the initiative with a contribution of 13,000 euros. The historic center was crowded with thousands of spectators.
