The sacred Passion of Christ re-enactment in the heart of Holy Week in Joppolo Giancaxio
The Passio Christi – Il Martorio is one of the most intense and evocative manifestations of the Sicilian religious tradition. Every year, during Holy Week, the small town of Joppolo Giancaxio, in the province of Agrigento, turns into a true open-air theater: the streets of the historic center become the natural stage where the Passion of Christ unfolds, from the trial before Pilate to the deposition in the tomb.
The event is deeply rooted in local history and is considered a literary and spiritual legacy of the poet and playwright Cavalier Filippo D'Orioles, whose texts inspire the sacred re-enactment. The tradition is ancient: a contract dated May 7, 1807, preserved in the town's Mother Church archive, documents Francesco Vella's commitment to ensuring the continuity of the performance through dedicated funding, proving that this rite dates back at least two centuries.
The performance stages the most intense and moving stages of the Via Crucis. The scenes include:
Over time, the performance has been enriched and reinterpreted through the inclusion of choral elements such as the Choros, the prefiche (professional mourners), the bearers of the Holy Body, and the singers who perform ancient texts in polyphony, contributing to an intense and immersive atmosphere. Actors and extras are mostly local residents, confirming how the entire community of Joppolo Giancaxio participates in this moment of faith and collective identity.
The event is coordinated by the Pro Loco Joppolese, with the support of the Municipality and the Church. More than just a moment of spirituality, the Passio Christi represents an authentic cultural and anthropological heritage of great value for the Agrigento area and for Sicily, capable of uniting faith, art, and community during the Easter period.
The 2026 edition of the Passio Christi – Il Martorio took place on Saturday, March 28, 2026, starting at 7:00 PM, along the streets of the historic center of Joppolo Giancaxio, in the province of Agrigento.
As per tradition, the performance re-enacted the most intense scenes of the Via Crucis, from the trial before Pilate to the Crucifixion, and finally the deposition in the tomb, based on the texts of Cavalier Filippo D'Orioles. The performance was enriched by the choral elements that have become characteristic of the Martorio: the Choros, the professional mourners, the bearers of the Holy Body, and the polyphonic singers.
The initiative was coordinated by the Pro Loco Joppolese, which renewed the invitation to the community and visitors to participate in an event of great spiritual, cultural, and anthropological value.
The scenes performed, according to the texts of Cavalier Filippo D'Orioles:
