The itinerant sacred representation of the Passion of Christ in Crispiano
The Passio Christi is the living sacred representation of the Passion of Christ held in Crispiano, a town in the province of Taranto, in the heart of Puglia. For over twenty years, the event has taken place on the Saturday preceding Palm Sunday, effectively opening the Holy Week in Crispiano: a collective ritual that transforms the town's squares, avenues, and alleys into a grand open-air stage.
The unique feature of the event is its itinerant nature: the audience follows the actors from scene to scene, traversing the city's symbolic landmarks. The path touches Piazza San Francesco d'Assisi, Piazza Madonna della Neve, and the streets of the town center, concluding in the Grotte del Vallone, the natural setting that hosts the most intense scenes of the Crucifixion and the deposition. The narrative retraces the key moments of the Gospel, from the Last Supper to the trial of Jesus, up to Golgotha, in a crescendo of emotion and participation.
The strength of Passio Christi lies in the involvement of the community: every year, about one hundred performers of all ages, from children to the elderly, bring the characters of the Passion to life. Behind the scenes, sewing workshops create the costumes, basic acting courses focused on gesture, breath, and emotion are held, and a photography contest dedicated to the event takes place. Direction and organization are entrusted to the Catholic Action of the San Francesco d'Assisi parish, with the collaboration of the Confraternita dell'Immacolata, the Pro Loco of Crispiano, and the municipal administration.
Within the panorama of sacred representations of Holy Week in Puglia, the Passio Christi of Crispiano stands out for its strong popular roots and the scenographic use of the Grotte del Vallone. In case of bad weather, the organization may move the performances to the municipal theater, ensuring the event proceeds regardless. Admission is free, making it an event open to everyone, both locals and visitors who come to Crispiano to experience a moment of spirituality and shared tradition.
The 24th edition of the Passio Christi, titled "In the Sign of Francis," took place in Crispiano on Saturday, March 28, 2026, on the eve of Palm Sunday. The cold temperatures of the weekend and the forecast of bad weather prompted the San Francesco d'Assisi parish to move the performance from the Grotte del Vallone to the municipal theater of Crispiano. The young performers shared a simple message on social media: "The message of love of the Passion of Christ will warm us up." The choral strength of the event, with its performers of all ages, remained intact even within the indoor setting of the town theater.
Due to bad weather, the 24th edition "In the Sign of Francis" was held at the municipal theater instead of the Grotte del Vallone, with two performances:
Featuring the young performers of the San Francesco d'Assisi parish, who staged the moments of the Passion of Christ, from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion.
The Saturday before Palm Sunday, at dusk. In 2026, the event is scheduled for Saturday, March 28.
Crispiano (TA), Puglia. The itinerant route crosses the town center, starting from the area of Piazza San Francesco d'Assisi and ending, in the traditional version, at the Grotte del Vallone. In case of bad weather, the performances are held at the municipal theater.
Free. When performances are held at the municipal theater, free tickets must be collected at the points indicated by the organization.
Crispiano can be reached by car via the SS7 road between Taranto and Martina Franca; the town center is a few kilometers from the exit and well-connected to the provincial capital, Taranto.
