The Living Passion of Atina

In the heart of the Valle di Comino, the village of Atina, in the province of Frosinone (Lazio), preserves one of the most deeply felt sacred representations in the Ciociaria region: the Passio Christi, a Living Passion that re-enacts the final earthly days of Jesus. Inspired by ancient medieval sacred plays, the event ideally transports the spectator back to the Jerusalem of two thousand years ago, reconstructed among the squares, alleys, and stairways of Atina's historic center.

An entire village on stage

The strength of the Passio Christi of Atina lies in the participation of the community: around two hundred performers, almost all locals, don costumes and armor to embody the apostles, the high priests of the Sanhedrin, the Temple guards, the Roman soldiers, and the people of Jerusalem. The direction is entrusted to Roberto Petrilli, who coordinates the sets, lighting, and a live soundtrack that emotionally accompanies every scene. Over the years, the re-enactment has also hosted notable performers: the actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta has played the role of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

The path of the Passion

The performance is itinerant and winds through the village as a procession, with the audience following the key stages of the Passion:

• The triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem;
• The Last Supper and the washing of the feet;
• The agony and prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane;
• The betrayal and arrest;
• The trial before the Sanhedrin, in the courtyard of Caiaphas' palace;
• The condemnation in the praetorium of Pontius Pilate;
• The ascent to Calvary and the crucifixion;
• The death and, finally, the announcement of the resurrection.

Faith, tradition, and community

The Passio Christi is not just a show: it is a moment of strong collective identity for Atina. Born from an idea by Monsignor Domenico Simeone, it is organized by the Pro Loco of Atina together with the Santa Maria Assunta parish and the Marcantonio Palombo Association. The evening, which usually takes place during the Easter period starting at 8:30 PM, attracts a large audience every year, reaching the village from the neighboring towns of the Valle di Comino and the province of Frosinone.
