Crafts, Valle Caudina flavors, and live music for the Saint Andrew weekend

In Paolisi, a village of just under two thousand inhabitants overlooking the left side of the Valle Caudina, in the province of Benevento, the last weekend of November has a special flavor. It is the moment when the community celebrates its patron saint, Saint Andrew the Apostle, whose liturgical feast falls on November 30th, and when the town streets light up with the first festive decorations: the Christmas market and the food stalls set up by local associations mark the start of the local Christmas calendar, following the religious and civil celebrations of the patronal feast.
The heart of the festivities is Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the space in front of the 17th-century church of Saint Andrew, along with the town center streets that stretch for about a kilometer and a half along the main axis of the village. It is a simple and intimate urban layout, flanked by noble palaces that tell the history of Paolisi—Palazzo Bifani, the 1622 Palazzo Inglese, and other residences with 18th-century stone portals—making it particularly suitable for an evening stroll among the stalls and wooden huts.
The market has the typical format of a village fair: few stalls, great attention to detail, and products to be admired at a leisurely pace while chatting with the makers. The space is generally dedicated to:
It is the kind of market that is worth visiting more for the atmosphere than the size: it can be seen in a short time, but it offers an authentic image of a community coming together.
Next to the craft stalls are the food and wine stands managed by Paolisi associations, which are the biggest draw for visitors from neighboring towns—Airola, Arpaia, Rotondi, and Roccarainola. It is an opportunity to taste, in an informal, open-air setting, the cuisine of this part of inland Campania, where the peasant tradition of the Valle Caudina meets the influence of the nearby Naples area. Hot dishes, desserts, and wine are served directly in the square, amidst the lights and music.
The program includes live music and surprises dedicated to children, with entertainment along the market route. These are the two ingredients that transform the market into a true village festival, with families heading to the square after religious services and young people staying until the evening.
In the program documented by the Municipality, the market is preceded by the Festival of Arts and Literature, hosted on Friday afternoon at 5:00 PM in Piazza Vittorio Veneto: a cultural meeting point that opens the weekend before the lights are turned on and the stalls open.
Coordination is entrusted to the Paolisi Youth Forum, which works in collaboration with all local associations under the patronage of the Municipality of Paolisi. This is a common formula in the small towns of inland Campania: the local youth build the program, while the municipal administration provides spaces, permits, and organizational support.
Those arriving for the market can take the opportunity for a short visit to the village's heritage, located at an altitude of 270 meters:
This is not a massive Christmas fair with tens of thousands of visitors: it is exactly the opposite, and that is its value. On a weekend in late November, Paolisi brings together popular devotion, craftsmanship, home-style cooking, and live music in just a few hundred meters of village: for those visiting the Valle Caudina or the Sannio region in winter, it is a direct way to experience the real life of a small town in the province of Benevento.
The 2026 edition of the Christmas market and food stalls in Paolisi has not yet been officially announced: as of the writing of this sheet, neither the dates nor the program have been published. However, the event is linked to a fixed recurrence, the feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle on November 30th, the town's patron saint, and therefore takes place between late November and the first days of December.
The established formula includes setting up stalls and huts along Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the streets of the center, food and wine stands managed by Paolisi associations, live music, and initiatives dedicated to children, all with free entry. The organization is coordinated by the Paolisi Youth Forum with the patronage of the Municipality of Paolisi, in the province of Benevento.
Those wishing to participate can follow updates on the Municipality's official website and on the social media channels of the town's associations, where the program is usually published a few days in advance.
By car: Paolisi is located a few kilometers from the SS7 Appia state road, the historic axis that crosses the Valle Caudina connecting the Naples area to Benevento. From Naples and the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the exit for Baiano and continue towards the valley; from Benevento, take the state road in the direction of Airola-Arpaia. The town center is compact: it is best to park along the access roads and continue on foot, as the central streets are closed to traffic or very crowded during the event.
The Benevento-Naples railway line via Valle Caudina, managed by EAV, has been undergoing long modernization works with a consequent suspension of service: before traveling by train, it is essential to check the updated timetables on the EAV website. Alternatively, the connection is guaranteed by bus lines serving the towns in the valley.
Access to the market and the initiatives in the square is free of charge. Only purchases at the stalls and food consumption at the stands are paid.
