The summer celebration of bread and extra virgin olive oil on the slopes of Mount Etna

The Pane Condito Festival is one of the most cherished summer events in Castiglione di Sicilia, a medieval village perched over 600 meters above sea level in the Alcantara Valley, in the province of Catania. Recognized as one of the 'Borghi più belli d'Italia' (Most Beautiful Villages in Italy), the town provides a stunning backdrop for this popular festival held in the central Piazza XI Febbraio, celebrating the cornerstone of local rustic cuisine: bread.
The heart of the event is the fragrant bread baked by local master bakers, offered to visitors drizzled with extra virgin olive oil produced on the slopes of Mount Etna. At the stalls set up for the occasion, you can taste various types of 'pane condito' (seasoned bread), along with other local gastronomic delights, typical products, and wines from the Etna area, in a culinary journey that highlights the community's raw ingredients.
The festival is more than just food: throughout the day, guided tours of Castiglione di Sicilia are often available, covering historical, cultural, gastronomic, and naturalistic routes. It is the perfect opportunity to admire the alleys of the historic center, the churches, and the monuments, while taking in the breathtaking views of the Alcantara Valley and the Mount Etna massif.
The festival comes alive in the evening with the opening of the stalls and the start of the tastings. The square then fills with live musical entertainment, fostering a convivial atmosphere between residents and visitors, typical of a traditional Sicilian village festival. Admission is free, and the event is organized by the Municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia.
The Pane Condito Festival represents a small journey into the gastronomic culture of the Sicilian hinterland, where bread and oil tell the story of centuries of agricultural tradition. For those visiting Sicily in the summer, it is the ideal occasion to combine the discovery of an authentic village with the pleasure of genuine flavors from the land of Etna.
