About Pancuin

On the evening of Epiphany, in Basaldella di Vivaro in the Pordenone area, the Pancuin is lit: the large traditional bonfire which, according to ancient Friulian custom, is said to predict the course of the new year. Amidst fartaia with luganiga and mulled wine offered to everyone, the community gathers around the flames in one of the most cherished winter events of the Carnic-Pordenone region.

The Epiphany Fire

In Friuli, the start of the year smells of smoke and mulled wine. On the evening of January 5th, the eve of Epiphany, the ritual of the Pancuin (or Panquin) is renewed in Basaldella di Vivaro. This is the great Epiphany bonfire that belongs to the region's deep peasant tradition. According to ancient belief, the direction taken by the smoke and sparks is said to predict the outcome of the harvest and the year ahead.

The Evening of January 5th

The event takes place on via Spilimbergo: the large bonfire is lit at 8:00 PM, but the festivities begin earlier. Starting from 7:00 PM, fartaia con luganiga โ€” the typical Friulian omelette with sausage โ€” and mulled wine are distributed to everyone to warm up while waiting for the flames to rise towards the winter sky.

A Tradition that Unites

The Pancuin is much more than a bonfire: it is a collective ritual that marks the change of season and brings the entire community of Basaldella, a hamlet of Vivaro, together around the fire. Organized by the Pro Loco with the support of the Municipality of Vivaro, the event keeps alive one of Friuli's most deep-rooted customs, where Epiphany bonfires โ€” called pignarรปl, seima, or indeed pancuin depending on the area โ€” illuminate dozens of villages on the same night.
