About Palomonte Carnival

The Palomonte Carnival is one of the most deeply rooted folk festivals in the Salerno hinterland. For over forty years, local families have been crafting allegorical floats and sewing bespoke costumes for a traveling parade that visits the town's three hamlets: Valle, Bivio, and Perrazze. Organized by the Pro Loco Palomonte with the support of the Municipality, the Province of Salerno, and the UNPLI, the event features masked processions, street performers, traditional food stalls, and final awards ceremonies.

The Carnival of the Three Hamlets

The Palomonte Carnival is the winter festival that transforms Palomonte—a town of about four thousand residents in the province of Salerno, Campania—into a bustling workshop of papier-mâché and colorful fabrics. The event is not confined to a single location; the parades move between the three municipal hamlets of Valle, Bivio, and Perrazze, allowing each part of the town to host the floats and masked groups in turn. This traveling format gives the festival a unique character, distinct from large city carnivals, and truly involves the entire community.

A Tradition Born After the 1980 Earthquake

Local history tells of a carnival that has been running for about forty years, with roots tracing back to the reconstruction following the 1980 earthquake. The festival was revived by residents as a symbol of collective rebirth. In 2025, the community celebrated over forty years of the event—a rare feat of continuity for a festival entirely self-funded by local families and never turned into a commercial operation.

Allegorical Floats and Bespoke Costumes

The hallmark of the Palomonte Carnival is the craftsmanship behind it. For weeks, in garages and warehouses across the hamlets, neighborhood groups build allegorical floats, while seamstresses and volunteers sew hundreds of costumes for the participants. Each edition revolves around a theme that guides the set design, choreography, and music, turning the parade into a true theatrical performance rather than a simple procession.

  • Allegorical floats built and self-funded by local families
  • Masked groups with bespoke costumes and months of choreographed preparation
  • Street performers and entertainment along the parade route
  • Food area featuring traditional Palomonte cuisine
  • Final awards for floats and masks in Senior and Junior categories

Competitions and the Mascot

Alongside the parade, the Pro Loco hosts initiatives aimed at younger generations, such as the Artist Carnival competition for schools. In the 2026 edition, a new official mascot was selected based on a child's drawing. Allegrino, the 2026 mascot, combines the colorful jacket of Harlequin, the white trousers of Pulcinella, a jester's bell cap, and two large white wings—the wings of imagination.

Carnival Flavors

As with any festival in the Campanian hinterland, gastronomy plays a central role. The food area offers traditional local dishes, starting with cavatiello palomontese, a handmade pasta prepared by local women using methods passed down through families. In the 2025 edition, it was served in the historic version known as the cavatiello of Ze' Nunziata. Around the tables, as well as along the parade route, the festival serves as a vital meeting point for all generations.

Organizers

The event is coordinated by the Pro Loco Palomonte, with the patronage of the Municipality of Palomonte, the Province of Salerno, and the UNPLI (National Union of Pro Loco of Italy). However, the true driving force remains the local families: children, students, artisans, seamstresses, and professionals who contribute their time, materials, and skills every year.

Palomonte and Its Territory

Palomonte sits at an altitude of about 550 meters in a panoramic position at the foot of the Alburni Mountains, in the upper Sele Valley. It is a village defined by agriculture and shared traditions. The carnival is the moment when this identity is showcased to the outside world, attracting visitors from across the province of Salerno and the inland areas of Campania. For those visiting from further afield, it is a perfect excuse to discover a corner of the Campanian hinterland far from the beaten tourist path.

Palomonte Carnival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Palomonte Carnival featured the 'Special 90's' theme, a dive into the nineties with neon colors, dance music, and references to the entire decade. Parades opened on Tuesday, February 17 in the Valle hamlet, continued on Saturday, February 21 in Bivio, and concluded on Sunday, March 1 in Perrazze with a grand finale: float gathering from 1:30 PM, parade from 3:00 PM, mask awards at 7:00 PM, and lottery draw at 8:00 PM.

Palomonte Carnival 2026: Special 90's

The 2026 edition of the Palomonte Carnival chose the nineties as its guiding theme: neon colors, dance music, and a deliberately carefree atmosphere accompanied the allegorical floats and masked groups along the streets of Palomonte, in the province of Salerno. The event was represented by Allegrino, the official mascot born from a child's drawing, which combines the jacket of Harlequin, the white trousers of Pulcinella, the jester's bell cap, and two large white wings.

As per tradition, the festival moved from hamlet to hamlet. The first event was on Tuesday, February 17 in Valle, followed by Saturday, February 21 in Bivio. The schedule was also affected by bad weather, which forced organizers to adjust the dates compared to the initial plan.

The Grand Finale in Perrazze

The final day was held on Sunday, March 1 in Perrazze di Palomonte. From 1:30 PM, the gathering of allegorical floats and masked groups took place, with the simultaneous opening of the food area. At 3:00 PM, the grand procession began with the official presentation of the floats and masks, accompanied by street performers and entertainment for all ages. At 7:00 PM, the awards ceremony took place, crowning the creator of the mascot and recognizing the most beautiful masks in the Senior and Junior categories. At 8:00 PM, the lottery was drawn, and at 10:00 PM, the official awards for the edition were presented.

The Winning Float

The winner was the float The Time Machine, created by the float-makers of Bivio, marking their second consecutive success. The event was organized by the Pro Loco Palomonte with the patronage of the Municipality of Palomonte, the Province of Salerno, and the UNPLI.
